What We Are Learning in First Grade

Morning Meeting:

We will continue a month long focus on Empathy. Our students will be learning what it means to "put themselves in someone else's shoes" by showing empathy in the classroom.

Phonics:

We will learn even more about the way letters work together in words by moving our focus to consonant blends.

Reader's Workshop:

We will wrap up our first unit in reading. We will practice being good reading partners and then will end the week celebrating all we've learned about good reading habits.

Writer's Workshop:

We will continue our learning around writing small moment stories, where we focus on writing about just one small part of a bigger narrative story. This week we will work on adding craft moves into our stories so we can write like professional authors as well as editing our stories so we can begin to publish.

Math Workshop:

We will be starting Module 3 this week. We will be learning about how number names give us clues about the number such as number names that end in -ty show that we have groups of ten. Numbers that end in -teen have only one group of ten and some ones left over!

Science:

We will begin learning about different types of energy: thermal, light and sound.

Social Studies:

We will learn many United States symbols and why they're important.
