If your child has a medical note that prevents them from playing at recess, please make sure that you also inform P.E. and music teachers. Students move a lot in both of these classes and teachers need to know of any limitations.
Students may bring a dry, quick, and healthy snack. Good suggestions are apple slices, carrot sticks, grapes, goldfish, pretzels and granola bars. Please do not send chips, cookies, candy, anything that needs to be peeled, and anything that needs a utensil to eat for your child to have as a snack.
Students may bring a filled water bottle with only clear (unflavored) water. Do not add flavor packets to the water in case of spills. Students may not bring cups with straws. Only water bottles that can securely close will be allowed.
Character Strong
PARENTS, Please watch and follow staff directions in the morning drop off. We need you to pull all the way forward. Please do not stop at the kindergarten doors as you back up traffic. We need to keep everything flowing. We have staff on hand to assist students getting to class.
Here is the link to our Safety Procedures for Afternoon Dismissal.
Please remember to follow our attendance guidelines and keep your child home when they are sick. While we value your child’s learning time in the classroom, help prevent the spread of illness and ensure the health of other students by making sure your child is fever-free for 24 hours before returning to school. Please also talk to your child about healthy habits like frequent hand washing and covering your mouth when coughing.
January 12: Math MAP Test
January 19: Student Holiday
There isn't any homework this week. Students are encouraged to read every night and review multiplication, addition, and subtraction facts for automaticity.
This week, students will be learning about legends and myths. Students will also begin their drama unit.
Ask your child to explain what a drama is.
This week, the students will be unpacking a writing a prompt, identifying the central idea of the text, and then using text evidence to construct an ECR (extended constructed response) in response to a literary text.
Ask your child what is an "ECR" and what parts of the RACES strategy does it include?
Skills Block:
This week, students will have a quick review of compound sentences, selecting the correct coordinating conjunction, as well as having complete sentences before and after their chosen conjunction. In phonics, students will work with "silent" letters and their spelling patterns such as: kn wr, gn, mb, bt, mn
Ask your child to find words in their books/reading that have the spelling patterns listed above. Have them share with you how the spelling and the sound differ from one another.
This week, students will learn how to use the standard subtraction algorithm to solve subtraction problems. The math MAP test will be on Monday, January 12. Students should practice multiplication facts of nine. They will be assessed on their automaticity of these facts on Friday, January 16.
Ask your child what rules they have to follow when using the subtraction algorithm to solve subtraction problems.
This week, we will continue our 5th topic and complete Experience 2. This experience has focused on slow changes that occur on Earth including weathering, decomposition, and soil formation. We will finish the week by starting a Mini ADI (Arguement Driven Inquiry) where we will revisit our decomposing pumpkin investigation. We will discuss which environmental factor impacts decomposition the most.
Topic 5, Experience 1 Weather Topic 5, Experience 2 Slow Changes on Earth
Ask your child about the progress of our decomposing pumpkins. Has the carved or uncarved pumpkin had more progress decomposing?
This week, students will be learning about what makes a hero.
Ask your child who some heroes in our world are.
