The Ultimate Book Challenge is a reading incentive program designed to improve reading comprehension and enthusiasm for reading using a fun and unique competition format. Participants are given a reading list of 8 books and challenged to read as many books on the list as possible within a three to five-month timeframe. Students will compete in teams to determine their knowledge and understanding of the books. This year’s books have been carefully selected by Northwest ISD Elementary Library Media Specialists to include a variety of genres, reading levels, and themes. All Ultimate Book Challenge selections are available for checkout through the school library, so there is no cost to participate.
At Carter, students can start reading right away. The students will take a quiz over the 8 books in November. The top 6 students from each grade level (3-5) from that quiz will form three teams. Those three teams will compete on campus in January. The winning team will go on to the district competition on February 10th at Eaton High School. This will be an evening event, where parents and family members can come and cheer on our readers!
The following titles are selected for this year’s competition:
Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein
A Rover’s Story by Jasmine Warga
The Lost Library by Rebecca Stead
The First Cat in Space Ate Pizza by Mac Barnett
I Survived the Galveston Hurricane by Lauren Tarshis
The Legends of Lotus Island by Christina Soontornvat
The Superteacher Project by Gordon Korman
Haven: A Small Cat’s Big Adventure by Megan Wagner Lloyd
