It is our overall goal to produce outstanding orchestras, outstanding musicians, and outstanding people. We want our students to have a good foundation in the fundamentals of playing their instruments, and are able to be independent thinkers on their instruments.
We want our students to be self sufficient musicians by the time they enter high school orchestra, which means that:
- students are capable of looking at a piece of music and can analyze, interpret, and perform what is on the page
- students are able to self-assess their own playing for accuracy in intonation, tone quality, and rhythm
- students are able to make appropriate and logical decisions about technical aspects of the piece (left hand fingerings, right hand bowings, style, bow placement, articulations, etc.)
- students are able to make appropriate and musical decisions about musical aspects of the piece (dynamics, phrasing, etc.).
The goal for this specific assignment was to have the students analyze the conductor's score to Dark Adventures by Ralph Ford, and create their own bowings for each part (violin 1, violin 2, viola, cello, bass) in this piece. Typically, the director would go through the score and write in the bowings FOR the students to perform. In this case, we wanted the kids take ownership of this process from beginning to final product.
