Upper class students are eligible for National Honor Society after attending Byron Nelson High School for at least one semester and maintaining a 3.6000 unweighted GPA. Students who meet these requirements are invited to apply during the spring of sophomore year, fall and spring of junior year, and fall of senior year.
Strong candidates for NHS are involved in extra-curricular activities,
hold leadership roles, and perform consistent service in their communities.
They have excellent character, as demonstrated by teacher recommendations and reputation.
I was in National Junior Honor Society. Am I automatically in NHS?
No, NJHS and NHS, while similar, are separate organizations, unique to each school. Members of NJHS in middle school would need still need to apply NHS in high school.
Can freshmen apply?
Per the national NHS Constitution, freshman may not apply.
When are the application times at BNHS?
September for eligible juniors and seniors, February for eligible sophomores and juniors.
I have a 3.58 GPA. Can I still apply?
No, our chapter's minimum GPA requirement for application is a 3.60000 unweighted.
What makes for a strong application?
Examples of service and leadership are consistently the biggest growth areas on applications that are not selected. The Faculty Council looks for evidence of consistent service and at least two leadership opportunities for maximum points in those categories.
I was inducted as a member of NHS at my previous school. Do I need to reapply?
No. Your adviser or principal needs to email Ms. Dodd a letter informing her that you are a member in good standing and you will become a member of our chapter.
I was inducted at our school last school year. Do I need to reapply?
No. Once you are a member, you remain so unless you fail to meet chapter expectations and are recommended for dismissal.
What is the process for application?
Eligible students (unweighted GPA of 3.600000 or higher) will receive an email inviting them to apply in September/February. They must attend an informational meeting, seek a minimum of 3 teacher recommendations, and complete and submit their applications.
