Supplies for Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble (7-8 grade bands)
Below is a list of supplies needed for band this year. Your students may already have some of these, but some pieces are new. You can order these supplies from Amazon, or go into a local music store like Bells Music or Music & Arts.
Metronome/ Tuner-- we have provided these in class. However, students need access to some kind of tuner or metronome at home. These can be found free online, or students will get a LOT of use out of the Tonal Energy app. (TE Tuner.) It is a metronome/ tuner/ recording app all in one.
Flip Folder - we will only be using these ONCE this year. 8th graders should still have theirs. 7th graders will have the option of purchasing, or clipping the two pieces of music will be playing outside to just the lyre. Not ideal, but can be done in a pinch. Flip folders will be required in HS Band, so purchase now if you know you will be in HS Band.
Marching Lyre -- This will help with standing performances at pep rallies and football games- these are instrument specific. Oboes, bassoons, euphoniums, tubas and percussion do not need lyres. Euphoniums-- some students prefer to hold their flip folders, others prefer to use a flute flip folder. We have some you can experiement with before you decide. Saxophones- your lyres can often come in slightly different sizes. We recommend taking your instrument into Bells to make your purchase to be sure the lyre fits in the opening you have on your specific instrument.
Make sure you have all maintenance supplies and a good amount of reeds. Clarinets and saxes should have a brand new box of Vandoren reeds, your reed guard, and always have at least 4 reeds they are rotating on a daily basis. Double reeds should have at least THREE working reeds at all times.
PENCILS!!!! Pencils are expected to be kept in binders and on stands daily.
We are no longer providing pencil pouches for binders, but we HIGHLY recommend using a pencil pouch.
** 7/8 grade students will not need instruments on the first day of school, but please bring your band binders if you already received it at camp. If you didn't, you'll be receiving your new binder and music on the first day. Please bring your instruments on the second day of school.
Regular flip folder for clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, euphoniums, tubas, oboes and bassoons.
Trombone lyre. It is probably best to get the kind that attaches to the bell, as different trombones can have different sized lead pipes. Ordering a lyre that attaches to the lead pipe often ends up the wrong size and doesn't work.
Flute or French horn flip folders. Concert French horns do not typically use lyres, so students often use a trumpet lyre or the flute folder on the arm.
Examples of lyres. Be sure to choose the correct one for your instrument, and make sure you can return it if it doesn't fit correctly. Taking the instrument with you to Bell's to pick out the lyre is often the best if it's possible. This is especially true for saxophone and trombones.

Private Lessons
The beginning of the year GREAT time to get started in private lessons! Our teachers will be back on campus teaching in person. Check out the Private Lesson tab on the website. You can also enroll in lessons by clicking HERE, and we will put you in contact with the appropriate teacher. Email Mrs. Northam if you have any questions about private lesson opportunities.
We had a great time at AMS Summer Band in 2025!
The majority of our Lion Band members were able to participate! We learned Paint it Black, Land of 1000 Dances and other pep tunes! The percussion also learned several cadences. We played some games and enjoyed some popsicles and snacks. We finished off the fun with a trip to Main Event! So much fun with band friends!
For Incoming 6th grade band students:
Make sure you are taking care of ordering your instrument and supplies. If you order from Bell's Music Shop, they will deliver to the school. If you happen to get your instrument elsewhere, please do not attempt to put it together or play it until we or a private teacher can teach you the proper way to do it. This will save you from damaging this awesome investment. :) If you are playing a school owned instrument (oboe, bassoon, French horn, euphonium, or tuba) please remember that you will still need to order your supply kit that includes the mouthpiece for the instrument. Supply kits can be ordered through Bell's as well. You will still navigate to "Instrument Rentals" to access the supply kits. Supply kits are labels as "accessory" kits.
Percussion students, click HERE to see the supply list from Mr. Vogt.
*** Students do NOT need to bring instruments to school on the first day. Please see the FAQ list below for more information.
