About my project...
My personal interest is engineering because this specialisation allows people to innovate and demonstrate their creativeness with the usage of maths and sciences. I strongly believe that the given specialisation is a game changer as it changes the world every day with the help of its engineered technologies. Personally, I consider that in order to become and develop as a great engineer, not only maths, physics, an programming are required, but mostly the practical skills or ability to build something is prioritised in the first place. As I lack some practice, I want to get into the practical process more to get experienced at building something by my own hands, instead of merely watching YouTube videos about engineering and attending maths & physics classes.
The idea of this project came from the inconvenience to labour or engineer things for my personal and school projects as I lack the particular workshop space. Technically, I constructed a purpose-built table, which allows me now to work on my future projects conveniently. The table is called the workshop table. The workshop table is the product of my personal project to sustain a workshop space of mine for engineering and school-labour projects. The WT assists me in having the particular space for doing other projects and probably some paintings if the product requires it. It substitutes my usual way of working in the garage or on the yard’s ground.
Impact of the project on me
At the beginning of my project, I expected myself to learn a lot in practice rather than the “traditional” or research method that was theoretically supposed to provide all the required and helpful information because my project was actually all about learning the labouring skills more, which refers to prioritising the practice process. I thought that less research and more prototyping would benefit me in terms of learning skills and gaining new knowledge about table construction. However, none of these 2 ways contributed to the success of my work that significantly, but the communication that helped me gain even more knowledge through advising with my curator as it has provided me with various design ideas and recommendations that eventually made the product qualitative. This IB profile/ATL skill turned out to be the most effective tool that made my project process effective in terms of labouring work. The curator took me into discussions about certain parts of the table in case he noticed something planned wrong, which was quite advantageous as it created opportunities to immediately fix errors that would be hard to fix right after its completion. In addition, the project impacted me in such a way that I would think more engineeringly, so that I could see actual possibilities and limitations of building something partially with the help of practical sciences, like physics, which helped me a lot in figuring out the mass pressure that wheels would not withstand long enough and as a result, could get damaged. I am now determined to use more science in designing and actual engineering in order to make logical conclusions based on calculations and theoretical knowledge that would predict the eventual outcome of building a certain part.
