Risk Assessment Policy

For the correct development of the CAS program, the risks involved need to be considered, and systems set out in place.

The current legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan states that the person responsible for the program is responsible for the risks of all the involved, teachers and students. This role in our school falls under the Vice-Principal of Pastoral Affairs and the CAS Coordinator.

• Identifying potential risks: The risks involved in a CAS experience or project depend upon the activity itself. For a project or a CAS experience to be approved the following steps should be taken:

  • Potential risks involved should be identified in the CAS proposal by the person with the idea.

  • Vice-Principal of Pastoral Affairs and CAS Coordinator will assess if the risks are worth taken, and establish possible solutions and ways to prevent risks. Based on these projects will be either approved or disapproved.

• Managing risks: Once the risks are identified, different courses of action may arise depending on the case.

  • The appointment of a qualified supervisor to oversee the safety of people involved will be considered.

  • Parents will receivethe link to the CAS SITE the beginning of DP year 1, and sign a general consent form.

  • Parents are to be informed of particular activities and projects, where the risk involved is different that that of an activity held in school premises. A specific consent form will be developed depending on the needs. This information will be in Russian and Kazakh, as it is the working language of the parents in the community. A version of the letter in English will be kept for record purposes.

• Activities or projects held in school:

  • There is an in-house physician permanently in school.

  • Qualified PE teachers supervise CAS activitities.

  • All CAS experiences in school have a school-appointed supervisor.

• Activities or projects held outside of school (in Astana):

  • Parents are informed and sign a release form.

  • Buses to and from school are hired by the school, checking that they comply with safety regulations. This is approved by the Vice-Principal of Pastoral Affairs.

  • School appointed supervisors will oversee school planned experiences and projects.

  • Supervisor identified by students, or the students themselves when there will be no supervisor, will meet with the CAS Coordinator, and provide a document where they state that they will be responsible for the safety of the people involved.

  • All students and teachers within the city have access to medical facilities and care provided by the state.

• Activities or project involving guests within the school:

  • Risk assessment meeting is held for school visitors in their facilities (Vice-Principal of Pastoral Affairs or CAS Coordinator). Responsibilies and risks are identified.

  • Minors coming to school as guests will have a supervisor appointed to them by the guest institution. This supervisor knows of the identified risk assessment.

  • There is a school appointed supervisor.

  • In case of emergency for small numbers of guests, our medical team will deliver the first care needed. For larger number, the guest institution will bring their own care and medical team.

• Activities outside Astana:

  • Risks particular for the activity will be identified with possible courses of action.

  • Parents will be informed in detail, and sign a release form.

  • Parents will have contact numbers.

  • School appointed supervisors will be with the students. They include, but are not limited to, the CAS Coordinator and the CAS advisors.

  • The school medical staff will appoint a doctor to go in the field-trip.

  • Buses  are hired by the school, checking that they comply with safety regulations. This is approved by the Vice-Principal of Pastoral Affairs. The bus stays with the students at all times, ensuring means of transportation in case of emergency.

  • The places where the field-trips are held should have fist aid facilities for the location to be approved.

  • Students will be informed of the possible risks, and of their responsibilities.

Actions in case of emergency:

• The supervisor contacts medical support.

• Medical assesses the injury and may call emergency services upon need.

• The supervisor informs the CAS Coordinator or the Vice-Principal of Pastoral Affairs.

• The CAS Coordinator and the Vice-Principal of Pastoral Affairs inform the parents.

• A school appointed person will be with the injured student or teacher until their family arrives.
