Community Service Hours

UPDATES for Community Service Hours Requirement: for Seniors, Class of 2021 ONLY.

Starting from September 1, 2020, the following explains the current community service hours requirement for graduation until further notice:

1) To graduate, students still have to complete at least 60 hours.

2) To be eligible for an honors cord, you must complete at least 150 hours.

3) To be eligible for the Commitment Award, you must complete 250 hours+

4) THE CHANGE ONLY FOR THIS YEAR UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE: hours can be completed inside OR outside school.

Example: Student A has 98 hours all from outside NIS- you're done with your graduation requirements.

Example: Student B has 54 hours from inside NIS- you still need 6 hours inside or outside school to meet the minimum graduation requirement for hours.

Reminder- Community service hours are only granted/approved when students give up their personal time to volunteer. *If you get paid, it is not volunteering.

Examples include volunteering to sell Valentine's Day cards at lunch time or setting up the Halloween photo booth after school. **Missing class to volunteer at an event at school does not count as approved community service hours.

NIS Community Service Information and Guidelines (For Students below class of 2021)

Community service is important for self enrichment and the college application process. Universities look for both service and international experience from applicants, so showing that you have community service hours with various organizations is a way to set yourself above the rest on a college application.

You can start tracking hours at the 8th grade level!

Here are the steps that all seniors must complete in order to earn their NIS Community Service hours for graduation:

1. All students MUST earn a minimum of 60 hours of community service. 20 of those hours must be from outside of NIS.

2. Hours are to be earned beginning August 1st of the studentā€™s 8th grade year and completed and turned into Ms. Amy (College Counseling Office) by May 1 of the current grade year.

(for 8th graders, you may start to work on your hours now until your 12th grade year). ALL forms will still need to be turned in to College Counselor by the end of that school year.

3. Students must complete ONE Community Service Recognition Form/Signature Page, ONE Community Service Verification Form for EACH type of community service project, and the Community Service Summary Report. All forms can be picked up at Ms. Anzie's Office.

4. Students MAY NOT use community service hours that have also been used for making up attendance hours.
