The NIHR Research Delivery Network (RDN) launched in April 2024. Building on the success of the NIHR Clinical Research Network (CRN), our mission is to enable the health and care system to attract, optimise and deliver research across England. We do this as part of the NIHR's overall mission to improve the health and wealth of the nation through research.
Our vision is that the UK is a global leader in the delivery of high quality, commercial and non-commercial research that is inclusive, accessible, and improves health and care.
The RDN has two primary purposes:
To support the successful delivery of high quality research, as an active partner in the research system
To increase capacity and capability of the research delivery infrastructure for the future
As a result, research will reach more people, address changing population needs, support the health and care system and the economy, and become a routine part of care.
The NIHR RDN operates as one organisation across England, through a network of 12 Regional Research Delivery Networks (RRDNs) and a central Coordinating Centre (RDNCC).
There are 12 Regional RRDNs with footprints within the 7 NHS England regions. We are the South West Central region and are hosted by University Hospital Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust.
The South West Central RRDN covers the following Integrated Care Systems:
Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire
Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire
Dorset
Gloucestershire
3.34 million people live within the South West Central region. In 2023/2024, 67,091 people participated in one of the 758 studies that were delivered across 300 organisations. This included 11 NHS trusts, 261 GP practices and 28 non-NHS sites (such as care homes and hospices).
We support research across all specialties and settings.
