EDI strategy for NIHR Sheffield Clinical Research Facility (CRF)
The NIHR Sheffield CRF is committed to promoting and embedding equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) through all aspects of our work.
Diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact in our research and enhances the experience of our patients, communities, and workforce. By working collaboratively with our partners, we aim to create a thriving inclusive research environment that provides widened access and public confidence in health and care research; an environment that attracts and supports a diverse range of world-leading staff, fostering equal opportunity for everyone to achieve their potential.
Through embedding these principles we will foster the development of a culture of Impact, Excellence, Inclusion, Collaboration, and Effectiveness.

Driving equality, diversity and inclusion forward at NIHR Sheffield CRF
At NIHR Sheffield CRF, we are committed to creating an environment where everyone—participants, visitors and staff—feels valued, respected and supported. Our EDI activities focus on improving representation, reducing barriers to research participation, and ensuring our facilities, communications and practices are accessible to all. Through continuous review, staff training, collaborative working and meaningful engagement with our diverse communities, we aim to embed inclusive thinking into everything we do and drive positive change across the CRF.
You can read about the ongoing work around equality, diversity and inclusion at NIHR Sheffield CRF on the poster shown below.

CRF champions
At NIHR Sheffield CRF, we have Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI), Learning Disabilities & Autism (LDA) and Dementia Champions who are passionate members of staff that have volunteered to support the education of our staff around EDI, LDA and Dementia and support the delivery of our EDI strategy. They are advocates for good practice and improvement in EDI, and a point of contact for our staff and our research participants.
You can read profiles on each of our CRF Champions on our CRF champions page.
STEP UP strategies for trialists
Colleagues at the Sheffield Clinical Trials Research Unit (CTRU) have been involved in the development of this work - STEP UP: Strategies for Trialists to promote equal participation in clinical trials for under-served populations.
Whilst there are frameworks that have been created that help people identify where trial design may exclude populations under-served by research, until now there was limited guidance about how to create accessible trials for these populations.
The key recommendations and their implementation considerations were composed into a guidance document with the 6 sections below:
1. Recruitment and setting
2. Stakeholder engagement
3. Communication
4. Flexibility
5. Research training and hiring strategies
6. Data collection
For further information and to read the final report, please visit the STEP UP website.
