Our mission is to champion the delivery and growth of high quality research in Primary Care.
The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) is funded by the Department of Health and Social Care to improve the health and wealth of the nation through research. The NIHRin is the research arm of the NHS and plays a key role in the Government’s strategy for economic growth, attracting investment from the life-sciences industry through its world-class infrastructure for health research. Together, the NIHR, people, programmes, centres of excellence, and systems represent the most integrated health research system in the world.
Research is the way new knowledge is found. Clinical research (also called clinical trials or studies) is a type of research that is designed to test new treatments or ways of delivering care.
When research takes place in a community setting, such as a GP surgery, dental practice or pharmacy it can be called primary care research. This research is concerned with the prevention of disease, new and innovative medical technologies such as a new drug, health promotion, screening and early diagnosis, as well as the management of long-term conditions. Without research we would not have the drugs, devices and procedures we have today.
We have produced an 'Introduction to Primary Care Research' video led by Dr Nick Thomas, Health and Care Director for South Central Regional Research Delivery Network & GP at Windrush Medical Practice in Witney, Oxfordshire.
Introduction to Primary Care Research Webinar
The NIHR is made up of 12 regional research delivery networks (RRDNs) across England, and South Central RRDN is one of them; it is hosted by University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.
The RRDNs are delivering research across 30 clinical specialties, along with cross-cutting settings, and cover a broad range of areas, including major disciplines like cancer, cardiovascular, and dementia, along with specific fields such as surgery, social care, and public health, supporting research across all health and care environments.
The ARDT provides support for researchers and healthcare professionals involved in primary care research studies, so that patients can benefit from new and better treatments, and we can learn how to improve NHS healthcare for the future. Our team is comprised of GP research experts, research nurses, research facilitators, clinical research practitioners, and team managers that facilitate research within the area.
The RRDN brings together a wide variety of primary care practitioners, including GPs, dentists, pharmacists, health visitors and offers patients in primary care settings unprecedented opportunities to become involved in high-quality clinical studies involving innovations in prevention, diagnosis, treatment and healthcare delivery in the communities. Our intention is to improve the quality and outcomes of NHS care for patients through the widespread promotion and uptake of research in primary care.
