Globally, the UK plays a leading role in developing new imaging techniques and much clinical research relies on high-quality imaging provision. Imaging is also at the forefront of cutting-edge scientific developments such as artificial intelligence and industry collaboration underpins much imaging research. The NIHR recognises the importance of imaging and is working towards building research capacity and capability in this area. The NIHR Imaging Specialty plays a key role in this, as well as advertising and facilitating imaging research nationally.

The NIHR Imaging Specialty is led by National Specialty Lead Stuart Taylor and supported by Specialty Leads from each of the 12 NIHR Regional Research Delivery Networks (RRDNs) and the Devolved Nations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as various stakeholders from within the field. This structure was implemented when the NIHR Clinical Research Network (CRN) was succeeded by the NIHR Research Delivery Network (RDN) in October 2024, and replaced the former NIHR Imaging Group.
