The Imaging Specialty launched with the start of the NIHR Research Delivery Network (RDN) in October 2024, and replaced the former NIHR Imaging Group. The specialty continues the work of the group with a focus on three major priorities surrounding imaging research: the science behind imaging research; the workforce who conduct the research; and the delivery of the research.
The specialty includes representatives from a range of different academic and clinical backgrounds from within and outside of the NIHR, who establish the priorities and activities to take forward.
A comprehensive and integrated effort is underway within the Imaging Specialty to significantly enhance the capacity, capability and infrastructure for cutting edge imaging research across the NHS and the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) ecosystem. This unified approach aims to overcome current challenges and propel the UK to the forefront of imaging innovation, ultimately improving patient care.
A core focus of the specialty is identifying and addressing critical gaps in imaging research infrastructure. We aim to provide solutions that enable investigators to conduct high-quality imaging research in the NHS with key initiatives such as facilitating access to clinical trial unit support with specialised expertise in imaging studies.
Complementing this, significant attention is given to strengthening the imaging workforce. This includes fostering a "community of practice" for NIHR-supported imaging researchers, improving early-to-mid career opportunities and enhancing academic career pathways in imaging. Key activities involve advocating for increased clinical academic training within core radiology and radiographer curriculums, working with trainee research groups, encouraging uptake of the NIHR Associate Principal Investigator scheme and creating NIHR fellowships in joint partnership with industry, colleges and charities.
Efforts are also concentrated on improving the imaging research delivery infrastructure and capacity within the NIHR and across its partners and stakeholders - NHS, academic and life sciences. By achieving greater efficiencies in research delivery, improved funding and staffing models and better resource access, the aim is to build confidence among partners and patients that consistently high quality imaging can be supported. Additionally, this work aims to foster collaborative networking to optimise delivery and provide flexible capacity for imaging research.
Work is undertaken alongside a range of stakeholders including colleges, professional groups and NHSE, to ensure a cooperative, effective approach, accelerate imaging research and translate findings into clinical practice, ultimately improving patient care within the NHS.
