Course Descriptions

Concert Choir - Course 610 - 5 Credits

Concert Choir is a large performance ensemble comprised of 10th-12th grade sopranos and altos and 9th-12th grade tenors and basses. Students receive instruction in musicianship, choral skills, and performance skills. Choral music ranging from the classics to the contemporary is explored. At times the choir sings in Latin, German, French, Italian and other languages. The ensemble performs multiple times throughout the year.

Honors Concert Choir - Course 610H - 5 Credits

The honors-weighted section of Concert Choir is an extension of the coursework required for the non-weighted ensemble. In addition to the standard curriculum for the ensemble, students will participate in a private lesson/enrichment; have advanced performance, sight reading, and scale expectations; have additional performance requirements; and will be required to attend one performance outside of their school per semester.

Freshman Choir - Course 611 - 5 Credits

Freshman Choir is a large performing ensemble for all 9th grade sopranos and altos. Students receive instruction in the basic elements of music. Musicianship, choral, and performance skills are covered.  Students explore vocal music from light classical to modern. An introduction will be given to proper diction in English and other languages.

Madrigal Choir - Course 615 - 2.5 Credits

A specialized course, Madrigals recreates the music of the European Renaissance and choral chamber music. Entrance into this ensemble is by audition only. The singing includes madrigals and motets in many languages. The Madrigals perform frequently.

Show Choir - Course 616 - 2.5 Credits

Show choir is a small singing ensemble for serious music students in grades 10-12. Entrance into this ensemble is by audition only. The repertoire generally includes music from musicals and the jazz/pop idiom and often expands beyond typical four-part harmony.

Piano Lessons - Course 602 - 1 Credit

Individualized lessons for piano. Students who enroll in this course must have a piano/keyboard at home. Students will learn basic musicianship skills and proper piano technique.  Repertoire will be selected by the teacher from the classic piano repertoire.  Lessons are scheduled at the convenience of both the teacher and the student and usually occur once a week.

Voice Lessons - Course 609 - 1 Credit

Individualized lessons for voice. Students will learn the physiology of the vocal mechanism and study proper vocal techniques. Additionally, students will sing classical, jazz, and/or popular solo literature as determined by student's musical interests and vocal development needs. Lessons are scheduled at the convenience of both the teacher and the student and usually occur once a week.
