Biography:
I graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University in 2009 with a Bachelor’s degree in education and ever since I have been with Nacogdoches ISD! For the first 8 years of my career, I was a 4th grade math/science tBS from UNT and Master of Education from Stephen F. Austin State University. I moved to Nacogdoches and began my teaching career at Stephen F. Austin; then to Lufkin ISD and now to Nacogdoches ISD for a total of 37 years. As an EL Specialist and LPAC Coordinator my job is to identify and place students accordingly in the best learning environment to suit their academic needs with the agreement of the LPAC Committee. I work with the classroom teachers to monitor the academic progress of each EL student and help set their goals for TELPAS.
I serve on the Carpenter, Raguet, and Thomas J Rusk campuses.
My primary responsibility and goal for EL students on my three campuses is for each student to progress and progress in their academic and language skills.

BS de UNT y Maestría en Educación de Stephen F. Austin State University. Me mudé a Nacogdoches y comencé mi carrera docente en Stephen F. Austin; luego a Lufkin ISD y ahora a Nacogdoches ISD por un total de 37 años. Como especialista de EL y coordinadora de LPAC, mi trabajo es identificar y ubicar a los estudiantes en el mejor ambiente de aprendizaje para satisfacer sus necesidades académicas con el acuerdo del Comité LPAC. Biography:
Monica Garcia and was born in Chicago, IL, but has lived in East Texas for the majority of her life. She is the youngest of five siblings who are all first-generation college graduates.
Monica received her Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from Stephen F. Austin in 2018 and later received her Master of Education in Teaching and Learning with an emphasis on Bilingual/ESL Education from Stephen F. Austin in 2020.
She chose a career in education because she has a genuine interest in creating positive, culturally responsive learning environments that will lead to academic success for all children. Monica has served as an ESL teacher for Newcomers at the middle school level and ELAR teacher at the elementary level.
She is currently transitioning into her new role as EL Specialist and LPAC Coordinator for Brooks-Quinn-Jones Elementary and Fredonia Elementary. Monica looks forward to learning and collaborating with fellow EL Specialists and NISD staff to promote the success of NISD's growing number of Emergent Bilinguals.

Mónica García y nació en Chicago, IL, pero ha vivido en el este de Texas durante la mayor parte de su vida. Ella es la menor de cinco hermanos que son todos graduados universitarios de primera generación. Monica recibió su Licenciatura en Ciencias en Estudios Interdisciplinarios de Stephen F. Austin en 2018 y luego recibió su Maestría en Educación en Enseñanza y Aprendizaje con énfasis en Educación Bilingüe / ESL de Stephen F. Austin en 2020. Ella eligió una carrera en educación porque tiene un interés genuino en crear entornos de aprendizaje positivos y culturalmente receptivos que conduzcan al éxito académico para todos los niños. Biography:
Mario Torres is an English Learner Specialist and Language Proficiency Assessment Coordinator in Nacogdoches ISD. Mario has achieved success with well-established companies such as Dayton-Hudson Corporation, Starbucks, and as a Realtor® to name a few. After spending more than 18 years in Education, at the middle school level, Mario understands that using researched-based and brain-based learning strategies leads to increased student achievement. Mario holds a BA in psychology from The University of Texas at Austin. As a lifelong learner, Mario enjoys traveling, reading and volunteering within the community. His main goal as an educator, is to help increase the quality of life for all members of the community.

Después de pasar más de 18 años en Educación, a nivel de escuela intermedia, Mario comprende que el uso de estrategias de aprendizaje basadas en la investigación y en el cerebro conduce a un mayor rendimiento estudiantil. Mario tiene una licenciatura en psicología de la Universidad de Texas en Austin. Como aprendiz de por vida, Mario disfruta viajar, leer y ser voluntario dentro de la comunidad. Su principal objetivo como educador es ayudar a mejorar la calidad de vida de todos los miembros de la comunidad.

I graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University in 2009 with a Bachelor’s degree in education and ever since I have been with Nacogdoches ISD! For the first 8 years of my career, I was a 4th grade math/science teacher then moved to being a math interventionist. Currently, I am the English Learner Specialist and LPAC Coordinator for Fredonia Elementary and Nettie Marshall Academy of Dual Language. My main job responsibilities include:
· Identification, assessment, and placement of English Learners
· Provide support to teachers to help with student learning
· Gather data and establish TELPAS goals to ensure EL student’s academic and linguistic growth
My goal is to support student learning and teacher practice to help achieve academic success for all!
On a personal note I am a wife and mother of 4--(NHS class of 2019, 2021, 2029 and 2031).
Me gradué de la universidad de Stephen F. Austin en 2009 con una licenciatura en educación y desde entonces he estado trabajando con el distrito de Nacogdoches. Durante los primeros 8 años de mi carrera, fui maestra de matemáticas/ciencias de cuarto grado y luego pasé a ser intervencionista de matemáticas. Actualmente soy Especialista en Estudiantes de Inglés como Segundo Idioma y Coordinadora de LPAC para las escuelas de Fredonia y Nettie Marshall.
Mis responsabilidades principales incluyen:
• Identificación, evaluación y ubicación de los estudiantes EL (inglés como segundo idioma)
• Brindar apoyo a los maestros para ayudar con el aprendizaje de los estudiantes y
• Recopilar datos y establecer metas de TELPAS para asegurar el crecimiento académico y lingüístico del estudiante EL

Greetings! My name is Ms. Emma McBride. I am an English Learner’s Specialist for Nacogdoches Independent School District; currently serving 10th and 11th grades at both NHS and MRTHS. I graduated from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas with my Bachelor of Science degree is 2002. I had a rewarding career in the Medical Laboratory field for over 10 years. Because of my love of children and a desire to teach, I returned to school through Texas Teachers and earned my Highly Qualified Teachers Certification in 2012. I have worked for Nacogdoches ISD ever since. I began as a Science Teacher, and worked with students in elementary, middle and high school. I returned to school again in 2018 to attain my Masters in Education and School Principal Certification – which I successfully completed in 2019. I had also begun to study Spanish, and learned how difficult it can prove to be to become proficient in a second language. I visited Mexico City to immerse myself in the culture, and learned how lost you can feel when you cannot communicate due to a language barrier. In my current position, my goal and my main responsibility is to help our students learning English not feel so lost, to ensure that educators here at NacISD have the knowledge and strategies to best help our English Learners succeed. My vision is a NacISD that gladly serves their English Learners with compassion and proven academic supports to make learning a new language easier. Together, we can all become bilingual, biliterate and bicultural!
¡Saludos! Mi nombre es Sra. Emma McBride. Soy un especialista en estudiantes de inglés del Distrito Escolar Independiente de Nacogdoches; actualmente atiendo los grados 10 y 11 en NHS y MRTHS. Me gradué de la Universidad Lamar en Beaumont, Texas con mi licenciatura en Ciencias en 2002. Tuve una carrera gratificante en el campo del Laboratorio Médico durante más de 10 años. Debido a mi amor por los niños y mi deseo de enseñar, regresé a la escuela a través de Texas Teachers y obtuve mi Certificación de Maestros Altamente Calificados en 2012. He trabajado para Nacogdoches ISD desde entonces. Comencé como profesora de ciencias y trabajé con estudiantes de primaria, secundaria y preparatoria. Regresé a la escuela nuevamente en 2018 para obtener mi Maestría en Educación y la Certificación de Director de Escuela, que completé con éxito en 2019.También había comenzado a estudiar español y aprendí lo difícil que puede resultar llegar a ser competente en un segundo idioma. Visité la Ciudad de México para sumergirme en la cultura y aprendí lo perdido que puedes sentirte cuando no puedes comunicarte debido a la barrera del idioma. En mi puesto actual, mi objetivo y mi principal responsabilidad es ayudar a nuestros estudiantes que están aprendiendo inglés a no sentirse tan perdidos, para asegurar que los educadores aquí en NacISD tengan el conocimiento y las estrategias para ayudar mejor a nuestros Estudiantes de inglés a tener éxito. Mi visión es un NacISD que con gusto sirve a sus Estudiantes de inglés con compasión y apoyos académicos comprobados para facilitar el aprendizaje de un nuevo idioma. ¡Juntos, todos podemos volvernos bilingües, bilingües y biculturales!
Joella Villanueva

Biography:
Joella Villanueva grew up as a middle child in a family of eight. Her parents, Mexican immigrants were proponents of education. It was important to them to give their children the opportunity of going to school, because they did not have the opportunity.
She graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelor’s of Interdisciplinary Studies in Science, certified in early childhood through 4th grade. After teaching one school year, she became bilingual certified.
She has taught for 15 years, all at Nacogdoches ISD. Her experience includes teaching 2nd grade, kindergarten, and prekindergarten students. She also was a bilingual/ESL interventionist.
As the EB specialist for the high school, this year, her goals are to help teachers learn strategies to grow EB students in learning academic language, content and making connections with the students. She is also the LPAC coordinator.

Joella Villanueva creció como una niña de en medio en una familia de ocho. Sus padres, inmigrantes mexicanos, eran defensores de la educación. Era importante para ellos dar a sus hijos la oportunidad de ir a la escuela, porque ellos no la tuvieron. Se graduó de la Universidad Estatal Stephen F. Austin con una Licenciatura en Estudios Interdisciplinarios en Ciencias, con certificación desde infantes hasta el 4º grado. Después de enseñar un año escolar, se certificó como maestra bilingüe. Ha enseñado durante 15 años, todos en Nacogdoches ISD. Su experiencia incluye la enseñanza de estudiantes de 2º grado, jardín de niños y prekindergarten. También ha sido una intervencionista bilingüe / ESL. Como especialista en EB para la escuela secundaria, este año, sus objetivos son ayudar a los maestros a aprender estrategias para hacer crecer a los estudiantes de EB en el aprendizaje del lenguaje académico, el contenido y la creación de conexiones con los estudiantes. También es la coordinadora de LPAC.

Biography:
Maria Almendarez is an English Learner Specialist and Language Proficiency Assessment Coordinator for both McMichael and Mike Moses Middle schools in Nacogdoches ISD. Maria has been married for 28 years to Juan Almendarez and they have 4 children, all of which attended and graduated from Nacogdoches ISD schools.
Maria immigrated to the United States at the age of 7 and began her schooling as an English language learner at Nacogdoches ISD schools. She graduated from Nacogdoches High School in 1991 and subsequently attended Angelina College and Stephen F. Austin State University. Maria graduated in May 2004 from Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelors in Interdisciplinary Studies. Before becoming an educator, she worked as a bilingual paraprofessional at Nettie Marshall Elementary in Nacogdoches ISD and at Slack Elementary in Lufkin ISD. She has 15 years of teaching experience all with Nacogdoches ISD. She was at the elementary level for 8 years and 7 years at the middle school level. Maria’s goal as an educator is to ensure that Nacogdoches ISD students are well prepared to function satisfactorily, both academically and socially in a linguistically and culturally diverse local and global communities.
