Beginning Band
(Any 6th, 7th, or 8th Grade student who wasn't in band last year)
Band is a challenging yet rewarding program where students learn much more than reading music and performing on an instrument. We learn the values of teamwork, cooperation, and perseverance, and we have the shared experience of making and perfecting music together.
about our program, get matched up with an instrument, and submit the interest form!
Join the Band Class
You do not need an instrument or even know which instrument you want to play before you join. You also don't need any prior music experience. All you need is a positive attitude and the understanding that hard work yields amazing results. When you're ready to join, contact school's front office or email Mr. Black.
Students will explore the various instruments available to them during the first days of school. With Mr. Black's expertise and guidance, students will choose an instrument to play. Once this decision is made, information will be sent home regarding how to get the instrument.
In order for the band to be functional and balanced, Mr. Black reserves the right to limit the number of certain instruments within the group. Every effort will be made to give each student either their 1st or 2nd instrument choice.
Anything Else?
When joining Band, the two biggest concerns for most people are the cost and the time commitment. Here's a little more info on both topics.
Cost - Band does not have to be expensive! Mr. Black will guide you through the most cost effective ways to get an instrument and accessories for your child, and there is no concert uniform to purchase or "band fee".
Time - Band requires essentially the same time commitment as any other class: just 15 or 20 minutes a day for practice. In 6th grade, there are generally 1 or 2 after-school concerts during the year. It DOES NOT conflict with athletics. Many of our band students are also athletes!
