Mary Barnes, Science - Ms. Barnes graduated from UNCW with a bachelors in Environmental Studies and worked as an environmental consultant for 5 years in San Diego. She then pursued a graduate degree in teaching cross-cultural education. She has been teaching science for 13 years, 9 of which were at New Hanover High School. Ms. Barnes mainly taught Honors Biology and AP Biology during that time and was the lead Biology teacher at NHHS and attended the College Board Summer Institute for AP Biology. She received her National Board Certification in 2019. In her free time, she enjoys doing anything outside in nature, specifically running with her boxer pup, paddle boarding, snowboarding, tennis, and rock climbing.

Chad Goins, Dean/History - BA in History, NC Teaching Fellow, University of North Carolina Wilmington. Mr. Goins has been teaching in New Hanover County for the past 12 years. Prior to teaching in Lyceum, he taught 6th and 7th grade World History at Trask Middle School, where he was the Social Studies Department Chair and co-founder of the school's FBLA organization. Mr. Goins was active in leadership roles around the school, serving on the School Improvement Team and leading technology workshops. He has been a partnership teacher for UNCW, hosting an intern and also a Laney teacher cadet in his classroom. At New Hanover, Mr. Goins serves as a beginning teacher mentor in addition to his role as Dean of the Lyceum Academy. He received his National Board Certification in 2020. He loves bridging the gap between social studies in the classroom and real life. Mr. Goins enjoys to travel and have new experiences at home or abroad. He is a die-hard sports enthusiast, from UNC Tarheels to 49ers football. Mr. Goins can often be found annoying students and colleagues with a barrage of jokes and puns.

Jen Smith, Math - Wife and mother to a cat named Bunny, Mrs. Smith loves antiquing with her husband, doing crafty projects and hunting for shark teeth and sand dollars at the beach! Mrs. Smith was born and raised in Michigan, attended Wayne State University in Detroit on a full academic scholarship and graduated Cum Laude earning her BS in Secondary Education in 2004. She then went on to complete her MS in Education with a focus of Integrating Technology into the Classroom. Mrs. Smith taught Math for 11 years in Michigan before getting married and moving to Wilmington where she has spent the last 5 years at Topsail High School. Having taught everything from Foundations of Math1 to AP Calculus AB/BC, she is THRILLED for the adventure in Lyceum!! Go Wildcats!

Tyler Smith, English - Mr. Smith graduated from UNCW with a degree in Integrated Marketing Communications, but after a brief stint in the business world, decided to return to school to pursue doing what he loved. He has now taught English in grades 7-12 for 12 years, and has 9 years of experience with AP LIt and AP Lang. He earned his National Boards Certification in Secondary English in 2021 and loves teaching in Lyceum because of the emphasis on developing critical thinking and real-world skills to prepare students for life beyond the English/Language Arts classroom. In his spare time, Mr. Smith enjoys playing/watching sports, being outdoors, and spending time with his family.
