I am Melissa Wilson, the school social worker at Holly Shelter Middle School. I serve as a link with the home, school, and community in offering direct as well as indirect services to students, families, and school personnel to promote and support students' academic and social success. In my role, I emphasize and enjoy building relationships with families through identifying strengths to help students feel and be successful. Focusing on resilience is a way that I collaborate with students, parents, guardians, teachers, staff, administrators, and community agencies and organizations to address student and family needs. When I am away from school, I like to take walks, go kayaking, visit with friends, and watch the ocean waves. Please feel free to contact me any time you think I might be of assistance to you.

The VIA (www.viacharacter.org) classification of character strengths came from a multiyear project in which 55 top social scientists asked the following question: What is best about humans? Over three years, these scientists researched the world’s major writings on religion, philosophy, organizational studies, youth development, psychiatry, and psychology, among others, to seek out the virtues and strengths valued across cultures and time.
The result of all of this work is the VIA classification, or the list of 6 core virtues and the 24 character strengths categorized within them.
