Equity PD Update:
During the 2019-2020 school year, Dr. Eakins worked with NHCS on various topics. Primarily the focus was on Implicit Bias. To build upon the knowledge and understanding of our self-awareness of biases that we hold as educators, we will continue with this work, and developing advocacy skills will be the training focus for the 2020-21 school year.
Hidden Messages in Good Intentions: Microaggression sessions I and II will be offered to all staff during the 2020-2021 school year.
There are multiple dates and times that session I and session II will be offered. Click here to see the description, topics covered, intended outcomes, and registration for each of the sessions (I and II). Please register for the session that best fits your schedule.

Wilmington 1898: An Investigative Experience
We have had a number of teachers reach out wanting to know more about what happened in Wilmington in 1898. In a short synopsis, in November of 1898, a group of Wilmington leaders and participants staged a successful violent overthrow of a legally elected biracial government. This act has left an embarrassing racial stain on the city and has further strained race relations for several generations.
To try and better understand this event and to help give useful primary source instructional resources, a Canvas course entitled Wilmington 1898: An Investigative Experience has been created.
The course opens in Canvas on December 2nd and will remain open through the end of April.
The course is worth 1.0 Content CEUs in either ELA or Social Studies.
The course is self-paced - asynchronous.
There are a total of 9 modules with discussion boards at the end of each module.
If you would like to enroll, you will need to sign up through TalentEd and through Canvas.
Here is the title and section number to use to sign up in Talent Ed: Wilmington 1898: An Investigative Experience / Section Number: 13175
Here is the link to sign up with in Canvas: https://nhcs.instructure.com/enroll/JEBEEW
Please email Travis Matthews if you have any questions about this course.
