About the Society
Welcome to the National Honor Society (NHS) Webpage! NHS is a national organization established in 1921 to recognize outstanding students who demonstrate and are committed to the values of the scholarship, service, leadership, and character within school settings.
Scholarship: New Hanover High School's standard for scholarship shall be a cumulative scholastic average of 3.5 or higher. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, and character.
Service: Community service is an essential part of the National Honor Society and is defined by the voluntary contributions made by a student to their school and community. New Hanover High School's service standard is set to 40 service hours per year for each of our members.
Leadership: A leader is a person who is sought out for knowledge, advice and confidence. Being a leader means to have influence on people to do something extraordinary. Student leaders are resourceful and dependable, problem solvers and idea generators. A student leader realizes their influence in their school and community and models a positive attitude.
Character: Character involves having qualities of honesty, courage, and integrity. It requires good standards of morality and ethics. Students with good character are cooperative, courteous and respectful to others and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle. It is not something that can be taught, but rather something that must be modeled through example.
