Group counseling provides children with a supportive space to learn new skills, build confidence, understand different perspectives, practice helpful behaviors, and develop strategies for managing life’s challenges. When children share a common concern but have different ways of coping, they are able to learn from one another in meaningful ways.
Each group session includes discussions about thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and attitudes related to the topic. Students will also participate in hands-on activities such as drawing, role-playing, games, and relaxation exercises. Groups are offered for students in grades K–5 and typically include 4-6 children, depending on age. Most groups meet once a week for 30 minutes over the course of 8 sessions. Sessions are scheduled during times that will not interfere with classroom learning, utilizing the flex period built into our master schedule.
Group topics are selected based on the school’s greatest needs, determined through a staff needs assessment completed at the beginning of the year. I then choose the top areas of focus.
Examples of counseling groups offered throughout the year include:
Self-esteem and confidence-building
Positive thinking and optimism
Study and organization skills
Healthy lifestyles and nutrition
Friendship skills
Children of changing families
(divorce, separation, or living with a single parent)
Easing anxiety and coping skills
Social skills
Impulse control and attention skills
Because counseling relies on trust, all information shared in group will be kept confidential. The only exceptions occur if a child shares information about harming themselves or someone else, or reports any form of abuse.
