Curriculum 

Reading: This years NHCS will be utilizing a new Reading program called Wit and Wisdom. In this program your child will learn Fourth grade standard course of study objectives through engaging novel study and high interest trade books. 


Independent Reading Assignment: Each quarter students are given an assigned number of books to read in various genres. Students are required to complete Book Reviews upon the completion of each book. This assignment pushes students to step outside of their comfort reading and try new genres and authors. 


Vocabulary: Students will be assigned weekly vocabulary words to practice and use. All students will take a Vocabulary test on Friday. Links to study their words will be sent home. 


Grammar/ Writing: Throughout the year students will be given writing assignments that align with our classroom studies, readings, and social studies program.


Social Studies: NHCS uses the online Social Studies program called, Studies Weekly. In Fourth grade your child will focus on North Carolina History, Government, Economics, etc.  Social Studies and Reading are interconnected and the Social Studies text is used for informational text instruction.  


Math: NHCS will again use the Eureka Math program for Math Instruction. It is imperative your child know their multiplication tables in Fourth grade. Over the year we will cover many objectives in Math with one of the largest units being Fractions! 


Science: Students will engage with topics such as electricity, rocks and minerals, and animal adaptations.
