Course Sequencing
At Hoggard High School a variety of course sequences are available to students. First and foremost we encourage each student's course selection at any grade level to be based on the student's future goals, the students strengths and interests, an honest perspective on work ethic, and thought given to the student's out of school time commitments.
Listed below are some basic traditional course sequencing for New Hanover County students. If your student is planning to be in the IB Diploma Programme, their course choices might deviate from these sequences based on recommendations for their specific program. Additionally, if your student earned credits in middle school, has a special learning plan, or any other non-traditional circumstances that may impact scheduling, please consult with your student's counselor.

*Honors and Advanced Placement Options are available for many courses. The difference between honors or standard/regular courses is the level of depth to which the subject is explored, and the amount of independent work expected of the student (more homework & reading required). The curriculum of Advanced Placement courses are comparable to the depth and workload of college level coursework. AP Course Guide

*If your student is interested in taking online courses through NC Virtual Public School, please speak to your child's counselor to see if NCVPS courses are a good fit for your child. 9th grade students are not permitted to take NCVPS courses the summer before 9th grade or in the Fall semester. Spring semester courses may be available based on numbers at that time.

It is the responsibility of the student and parent to be aware if a college or university requires coursework for admission beyond what New Hanover Count Schools requires for graduation (for example, most 4 year colleges require 2 semesters of the same foreign language, and some require an art credit. Admission requirements are most frequently posted on a school's undergraduate admissions web page.
