Our mission is to ensure that every child, from Pre-K to 3rd grade, has the opportunity to become a confident and joyful reader. CFELP provides resources, guidance, and access to diverse books that reflect children’s experiences, open windows to new perspectives, and invite them into new worlds. By partnering with parents, families, educators, and communities, we aim to build strong literacy foundations that empower all children, regardless of background or ability, to reach their full potential.
We envision a world where every child has the tools and support to embrace reading as a gateway to lifelong learning and opportunity. Through equitable access to resources and meaningful family engagement, we strive to create a future where literacy bridges gaps, uplifts communities, and ensures that all children, regardless of circumstance, can thrive and contribute to a more equitable society.
Literacy serves as the foundation for all learning and provides children with the tools to access knowledge across every subject. Reading is more than a skill—it is the key to understanding the world, connecting with others, and navigating life successfully.
Research shows that strong reading skills are critical for academic success. According to a report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, children who are not proficient in reading by third grade are significantly more likely to struggle in all subjects, as literacy is the gateway to understanding complex instructions, word problems in math, and new concepts in science and social studies.
Beyond academics, reading empowers children to explore their identities, understand diverse perspectives, and engage with their communities. Books act as mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors, helping children see themselves, empathize with others, and imagine new possibilities.
By focusing on literacy, this project aims to give every child the ability to decode the world around them and unlock their full potential, ensuring they have the skills and confidence to succeed, no matter their background or future aspirations.
Early childhood is a critical period for developing foundational reading skills that shape a child’s future learning and success. Key skills such as phonemic awareness, vocabulary, and comprehension are established during this time, and children who fall behind in these areas often face significant challenges in later grades. According to the National Institute for Literacy, children who are not reading proficiently by the end of third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school. We must act before then.
Additionally, early exposure to books and literacy-rich environments fosters a love of learning and curiosity, helping children see themselves as capable readers and learners. By focusing on early childhood, we aim to ensure that every child has the tools and support they need to succeed, laying the groundwork for lifelong learning and equitable opportunities.
