Hello, my name is Andrew Hill, and if you have stumbled upon this website, you are likely a student or parent ready to begin Math 1 at Eugene Ashley High school. I'm happy to have you in my class and can't wait to meet you. There are a few things you will need to get started. Si no habla ingles, es muy importante que me envie un correo electronico y me lo haga saber.
First, my contact information.
My email is andrew.hill@nhcs.net. You can email me at any time, and I will be sure to get back to you within a few minutes, unless class in in session. To contact me at school by phone, you will need to call the front office at (910)790-2360, and use extension 70369, or just ask to be transferred to Mr Hill in Rm 413. Email is preferred. To ensure contact, send me an email with your child's name in the subject line. Test my response time!
Please take heed...I do not expect parents to be Math teachers, only motivators. If you can ensure your child is completing work, and asking for help when they need it, I can guarantee success.
If you have a second, please fill out this form. Your information will be secure and will only be used to contact you about your student's progress. Parent Contact Form
Next, what is Math 1? Foundations?
The evolution of Math to this point began with counting. Then, you learned Arithmetic (Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing numbers). Afterwards, you learned some basic Geometry (shapes and their properties), followed by Algebra (using variables to represent unknown values). Math 1 takes it a step further. You will manipulate problems involving two variables, and will investigate 3 main types of functions (linear, exponential, and quadratic). You will also experiment with Coordinate Geometry (shapes on a coordinate plane) and Statistics (Data collection).
The learning platform I use is Canvas, but there are additional resources I will refer students to for additional support. These resources are IXL, Khan Academy, and DESMOS. By the time students pass my class, they will be able to identify key mathematical terms, interpret and format graphs, process high-level, multi-step algebraic functions, and will analyze and implement appropriate methods to solve real-world problems.
Foundations of Math 1 is an elective course geared towards developing the skills needed to be successful in Math 1. We cover everything from basic arithmetic to linear functions. It is a time to sort out any prior misconceptions, shortfalls, or puzzling processes. This course is in high demand due to current events.

"How do I pass your class?"
Effort!
Math 1 - The class covers two quarters of the school year. Final grades are determined on a weighted scale where 40% comes from Quarter 1, 40% from Quarter 2, and 20% from the End of Course Test (EOCs). EOCs are required for the course and must be taken at the school. Within my classroom, quarterly grades are broken down into categories, Practice and Performance. Practice accounts for 40% of the quarterly grade and encompasses Classwork, Homework, Discussion, Participation, and daily assessments. Performance accounts for the remaining 60% of each quarterly grade and is comprised of assessments and projects.
Foundations of Math 1 - Foundations does not have an official End of Course Test, although I will have a summary test on the second to last week of class. It will count as 20% of the overall grade for class. I will use the last week of class for make-up work and remediation. Grades are calculated the same way by quarter as Math 1, Practice 40% and Performance 60%.
"What do I need to prepare for your class?"
The only materials you need are a notebook (take good notes), a pencil (pens are discouraged because we all make mistakes), and graph paper can come in handy. Personal laptops are welcome, but are not mandatory. School technology is still low on supply. You no longer need to procure an expensive graphing calculator! DESMOS is a free, online graphing calculator that closely resembles the online EOC calculator tool. Download the DESMOS app to your phone and you can use it at any time during class! Become comfortable with technology! You will need to check your student GMail frequently. You access your class via NCEdCloud/Canvas and check your grades on Powerschool. If you cannot access any of these by day 1, you will be behind! Please contact me with any issues. Mathways, Photomath, and similar apps are forbidden in my class. Don't cheat. Flex your brain muscles.

Ask for help when you need it. Students will sometimes feel overwhelmed and rather than identifying they need help, they avoid the work. My job is to teach, to help you learn. Hold me accountable for that. Use me for my purpose, please.
Don’t procrastinate, especially when it comes to projects. I will give you plenty of notice when assignments are due. You won’t need to ask. Due dates will be posted well ahead of time. Plan well, motivate yourself, and don’t wait until the night before. This is your responsibility.
Own your performance. I cannot MAKE you work. I cannot endow you with inner motivation to do well. I cannot ensure you are following along in all cases. You earn your rating. I will do what I can to help you get high marks, but if you show no inclination to learn, that will be a difficult task.
Check your email for updates. I have been lauded by parents, students, and administrators for the amount of communication I keep. You rarely will need to ask anything more than once, because it will be posted, sent, or archived somewhere.
Existential teaching. My students are people too. I know all of my students will be stressed at some point. Whether it be classwork, home lives, friends, jobs, etc., if I can help in any way, let me know. Try your best not to stress when it comes to my class.
Make sure you turn in all assignments. From my observation and experience, the majority of poor averages are caused by not submitting work. This applies to all classes and all grade levels at Ashley. Taking a lower grade for sub-par work is better than a zero for not trying.
