Hello, I'm Andrew Hill, your student's Math 1 teacher. I am a retired United States Air Force veteran, ECU graduate, and father. I've had a lifetime of experiences already including marriage, divorce, parenting, serving in the military, deploying for war, losing a father to cancer, moving from country to country, and much, much more. If you want to know more about my backstory and experience, feel free to keep reading.
Born and raised in Fayetteville, NC, I graduated from South View High School in 1997. In school, I felt I was more "math-brained", and was very active in technology. As a freshman, I earned an architecture scholarship by winning a state-wide engineering drafting competition. I ended up heading in a different career direction in the search of stability for my new family, and some experience as a young adult.
Post-graduation, I decided to serve my country and joined the United States Air Force. I went to Lackland AFB, TX for Basic Training, followed by technical school at Sheppard AFB, TX to learn my trade, Munitions Systems Technology. My first assignment was Seymour Johnson AFB, only an hour away from my hometown. I was enlisted for a full 20 years and gained a wealth of knowledge in that time through multiple leadership and professional development courses, multicultural experiences, and other training opportunities. I was actively involved in Operations: Northern Watch, Southern Watch, Allied Force, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, Provide Hope, and Provide Relief. I have been deployed to Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, and Afghanistan. I've also had job-related duties in Kyrgyzstan, Morocco, and Germany. Throughout my service, I've received an Air Force Commendation Medal and three Air Force Achievement Awards, among multiple other ribbons and devices. In September of 2017, I retired as a Technical Sergeant, (E6).
Towards the end of my military career, I decided to work towards becoming a teacher. Middle School Math was my target, because, as I have stated, I'm more "math-brained." Also, I felt that a male teacher/mentor presence, especially at the middle school demographic for NC, was in dire need. To meet this end, I met with an East Carolina University college adviser. Although I already possessed two Associates degrees (Associates of Arts - General Education, and Associates of Applied Science), I began the path towards a Bachelors of Science degree in Elementary Education through distance/online learning. I graduated in December of 2018, with my teaching license which includes Math instruction for grades 6-9.
After retiring from the USAF, I gained experience inside the classroom, working as an Instructional Assistant at Spring Creek Elementary (Wayne County Public Schools, 4th Grade) and Belville Elementary (Brunswick County Schools, 1st/2nd Grade). This experience occurred through a transition to my current home near Wilmington, NC. As luck would have it, a job opportunity popped up here at Ashley High School just as soon as I graduated from ECU. I began my teaching career here at Ashley in February of 2019.
