Program of Study
Development: Instructional content for the Dyslexia Endorsement Program was developed by experienced educators with deep knowledge in the areas of reading acquisition, structured literacy, dyslexia identification and intervention, and evidence-based instructional practices. Course developers intentionally aligned content with GaPSC standards specific to dyslexia and literacy instruction. Each course includes a current review of literature and the integration of reputable research-based resources and tools, ensuring candidates are equipped with the most up-to-date knowledge and practices to support students with characteristics of dyslexia and related reading difficulties.
Purpose: The purpose of the Dyslexia Endorsement is to prepare educators with the knowledge and skills necessary to identify characteristics of dyslexia, implement evidence-based instructional strategies, and provide targeted intervention to meet the specific needs of students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties. Aligned with GaPSC Rule 505-3-.112, this endorsement ensures candidates demonstrate competency in understanding reading development, structured literacy instruction, and the neurological and linguistic foundations of dyslexia. The program equips educators to serve as informed advocates and instructional leaders in supporting students with dyslexia across diverse educational settings.
Course Sequence
Course 1: Learning Development and Dyslexia
This course provides a comprehensive foundation in the development of oral and written language, with a specific focus on how language acquisition relates to reading and the identification of dyslexia. Candidates will examine the stages of language development from birth through adolescence and the ways in which typical and atypical language patterns impact literacy acquisition. Emphasis will be placed on phonological processing, language structures, and cognitive-linguistic factors that influence reading success or difficulty. Aligned to GaPSC Rule 505-3-.112, this course prepares educators to identify characteristics of dyslexia, understand the neurological and linguistic foundations of the condition, and implement evidence-based instructional strategies to meet the needs of all learners.
Course 2: Evidence-Based Assessments and Reading Strategies for Students with Dyslexia
This course focuses on the selection, administration, and interpretation of evidence-based assessments used to identify and support students with characteristics of dyslexia. Candidates will gain a deep understanding of the principles of effective reading instruction and intervention, grounded in the science of reading. Emphasis will be placed on using assessment data to inform instructional decisions and plan targeted interventions aligned to the unique needs of learners with dyslexia. Aligned with GaPSC Rule 505-3-.112, this course equips educators with the tools to implement structured literacy approaches and monitor student progress using multiple sources of data.
Course 3: Methods for Multisensory Instruction and Intervention
This course provides candidates with an in-depth understanding of multisensory, structured literacy approaches for students with dyslexia. Grounded in the science of reading and aligned to the competencies in GaPSC Rule 505-3-.112, the course emphasizes explicit, systematic, and sequential instructional methods that integrate visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile modalities. Candidates will explore and implement instructional frameworks that target phonological awareness, phonics, spelling, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension using evidence-based, multisensory strategies. This course is designed to empower educators to deliver targeted, individualized interventions that support literacy development for students with characteristics of dyslexia.
