What NGL is about
NGL’s purpose is “to integrate nonviolence into the fabric of human life through ongoing live experiments with truth focused on individual and collective liberation.” (Strange words? Read the detailed explanation here.) Since May 2022, nearly five years since we began our work, we are ready to share the fruits of our work and what we have learned. The key question we are grappling with is how to liberate ourselves from patriarchal conditioning and rediscover what it might take for humanity to realign with life.
We are also ready to ask, as widely as possible, for resources to flow towards us in support of the work. We are ready for bolder and deeper experimentation. For example, as BayNVC, our mother organization, is closing, we are passionately experimenting with how far we need to move from mainstream ways of functioning in order to align with our dreams of a full gift economy when the rest of society continues to function as it is.
And we are under-resourced.
We are confident that people exist who would be enthusiastic about what we are doing and will want to support it. Are you one of them? Here are the different ways that we can envision support coming our way:
Bring the vision to where it’s needed
Are you aware of individuals, communities, or organizations that are aiming to function in practical, visionary ways and who might want one or more of our experienced practitioners to offer them concentrated ongoing support, beyond a 3-hour introduction?
Do you have friends you could imagine inviting to this and other events? As individuals alone, we are very limited in our capacity to move effectively towards vision. When we come together with others, our capacity increases significantly, especially if we want to live in visionary ways. Who would you want to do this with in your neighborhood, family, community of interest, or anywhere else in your life? What would keep you from inviting them to come with you?
Engage with us in support of the vision
Are you yourself ready to join us and offer your passion, skill, and energy by taking on tasks (always within capacity!) and participating in projects that could use support? If you are unsure, come check us out by joining our growing community of NGL Friends here.
A radical approach to funding the vision:
This event is offered entirely on a gift basis. We are hoping that many people will participate and not give us anything, because they can’t. SO MANY events are not available to people who need them because they require money to participate. We are longing to remove barriers to access, as many as we know-how.
Simultaneously, we could imagine someone giving us $20,000 instead of anything resembling “market value.” This is a big step on the way to the vision of a world where resources flow to where the need is, without any money being involved: given the world we live in, we start with asking those who can to give us what would be seen as outrageous amounts of money, so that the people who want to do the work that we are doing can do so without having to earn money somewhere else.
Do you have access to financial resources, directly or indirectly, that you could flow our way in support of what we are doing?
So far, we have not received much when offering these events, and we are very much hoping that more people choose to give higher amounts as this is crucial for our sustainability.
What happens within NGL?
We are longing to make available to anyone, anywhere, the exciting discoveries we are making about what we can do together as humans when we restore, even in small measure, our trust in life. We also want to share what we are learning about the challenges that turning the tide entails.
We are experimenting in many areas, including in particular:
What supports the increase of individual and collective capacity to move towards our vision of a world that works for all?
What are practical ways of living within the flow of maternal gifting?
How do we make integrative decisions that support choice within togetherness?
What makes humility and vulnerability in the sharing of information possible?
What makes it possible to liberate ourselves from conflict aversion so that feedback and learning can flow?
What is the relationship between collective capacity and the presence of conflicts?
What is a path of liberation for all when it comes to the tough topics of power and privilege?
What does it mean to distribute leadership within a field held by a visionary leader?
Yes, we have been experimenting in all these areas at once.
We started with many principles and practices that Miki had already uncovered through her research, teaching, consulting, and writing. Now many of us are active participants even as Miki is still the main person articulating what we are learning together. This shift to a larger number of committed people increases our collective wisdom. For each of the events in the series, several people are planning to offer similar events afterward to increase capacity for themselves and for NGL as a whole. As more of us are able to share foundational and emerging NGL content as their own, with authenticity, responsiveness, and rigorous accuracy, we are deepening into a flow of modeling, coaching, and mentoring – leaders to apprentices, peer to peer, and apprentices to leaders. One of our goals is for Miki’s work to outlive her.
Please support us as, both individually and as a community, we step closer to allowing that to happen.
In this monthly series, we are inviting everyone present to ask anything they want about Nonviolent Communication. Truly anything. It could be basic questions about why we focus on feelings and needs. And it could be complex questions about why empathy sometimes doesn’t work for people. It could be questions about how to teach people about whether NVC is political. In each session, we plan to focus questions on specific themes.

11th Session:
Is NVC political or not?
with Miki Kashtan and Selene Aswell
Monday 7th September 2026
19:00-21:00 CEST

One of the applications of NVC is as support in facilitating conversations across major differences, including political. And learning NVC can also support us to express our own ideas in ways that make it more likely for another person to receive, whatever our views may be. So does that mean that NVC itself must be apolitical?
Though we’re looking at the specific question of whether NVC is political or not, we invite you to come with any related questions, such as:
It’s really important to me to support social change work that I believe will move us toward vision. How might I encourage this without being dismissed by certain groups for my views?
What can I do if NVC has gotten associated with certain political views where I live?
Are there any political implications to NVC? Is there a reason it more often appeals to people with certain political views?
Can NVC be helpful in reframing concepts and language which may be “banned” in certain political contexts?
While we don’t have a packet specifically on this topic, we invite you to explore Embracing Nonviolence as an Orientation to Life, which is indirectly related. This packet, as with everything we offer within NGL, is available based on gift.

Miki Kashtan and other NGL members who are CNVC certified or on the path towards CNVC certification will share about NVC from an NGL perspective. Miki will answer questions, facilitate the process of other people answering questions, and offer coaching on how to bring NVC to others - such as how you choose which bits to focus on, how much depth to go into and how much to potentially be with the person asking before answering.
About Miki Kashtan: Miki has been studying, integrating, applying, and sharing Nonviolent Communication since 1993. She has accompanied thousands of people in doing the same. She is an author, a practical visionary, and the mother of the Nonviolent Global Liberation community which functions fully within maternal gifting principles. She blogs on the Fearless Heart and has taught and consulted on multiple continents.
About Mareike Haustein: Before starting her life of radically living NVC within the maternal gift economy, first travelling around in her camper van, then settling close to Berlin to care for her health, Mareike was an extraordinary teacher who fully took every one of her students seriously and empowered them on their journeys. She is a candidate for CNVC certification and is offering coaching in the All Ages Collaboration Lab within NGL.
About Emma Quayle: Emma is a founding member of NGL and a NVC certification candidate. The integration and application of NVC for the purpose of designing environments that support thriving for both humans and other beings is deeply important to her. She brings this orientation to her NVC practice and sharing throughout her work within NGL and beyond.
About Kerstin Engel: Kerstin gets joy and energy from creating with her hands, connection with plants and animals, integrating different perspectives, mourning and holding empathic presence. Encountering NGL was like finding what she was looking for all her life, combining and going so much beyond what she had found in theoretical Marxist circles, feminist groups and NVC, integrating systemic change and liberation with nonviolence and interdependence. Kerstin is an NVC certification candidate.
About Vérène Nicolas: Vérène is an NVC Certified Trainer and facilitator and has been engaged with NGL since the early stages. Currently Vérène is facilitating offerings such as NVC for Liberation courses, empowering others to become NGL ‘providers’’, building infrastructures for Convergent Facilitation and taking part in the strategic direction of NGL, in addition to engaging projects external to NGL.
About Menaka Neotia: Menaka is deeply engaged in exploring the integration of the Liberation for all lens within the Power and Privilege (P&P) work that we are seeding in all of our teams in NGL. As one of the people in the development of the P&P tracking function, Menaka supports grounding our movement towards vision in the reality of the present.
About Isabel Ortega Caro: After being introduced to NVC in 2019 she joined the nonviolent activism movement Extinction Rebellion where she deepened her knowledge and an embodied experience of nonviolence. This inspired her to drastically change her life by co-founding an eco-village project in Italy where she lived for 3 years, and started to apply NVC in how to make decisions, flow feedback and engage with conflict in community.
About Selene Aswell: Selene is stewarding NGL Online and an active member of the Resource Flow Team within NGL. Certified by CNVC, Selene gets profound joy from sharing about living from an orientation to needs. She is working to cofound an NGL and NVC based in-person community in Maine, USA.
About Eddy Quinn: Eddy has been a part of NGL for 5 years and is deeply committed to participating in the creation of NGL’s culture of ‘NVC for Liberation’. He is a NVC Certification candidate and his relationship with NVC started 8 years ago during his time living in Tassajara Zen Monastery. His approach to NVC continues to be deeply informed by his Zen Buddhist practice.
About Carimar Barrientos: Cari has been deeply supported in her path of liberation and healing through Nonviolent Communication, Internal Family Systems, and the liberation lens of NGL. Finding Miki's work led her to a journey of learning NVC while she was doing a social change project in Venezuela (her country of origin), which started her on the path to certification and into NGL. She was certified as an NVC Trainer in 2025.
About Shar Molloy: For the past 30 years Shar Molloy has pursued a life of community living, environmental activism and social change. She has trained in the Work That Reconnects, Nonviolent Communication, and mediation to support groups through change and conflict. She is part of the NVC for Liberation and Storehouses teams and co-hosts community living experiments on land in Lutruwita (Tasmania) with her partner, Ian. Shar is an NVC Certification candidate.

This training is offered as a gift to everyone who joins any of these calls. We never charge for anything we offer. In order to sustain our capacity to do our work and continue to offer what is ours to do in the future, we depend completely on financial gifts given to us freely. To care for the material needs of the more than thirty people who gift their energy and do all it takes for NGL to function, we ask that you give the maximum amount you can give without overstretching or resentment. We fully accept and take pleasure in knowing that many people do not have the means to give us gifts, and we trust that others will give us enough to make it possible for us to keep the NGL project going. We ask that you consider this request, again, each time as you join one of these events.
We plan to share any money we receive in relation to these events with Empathic Way Europe based on understanding of their needs and ours.
We gratefully receive gifts at any time to support the sustainability of these offerings:
