First Session: NVC Assumptions and Intentions
with Miki Kashtan and Mareike Haustein
We invite you to read the section on NVC Assumptions and Intentions (or more) from the NVC Basics packet available here and come with any questions you have! For example:
Are all actions really an attempt to meet needs?
What can self-connection do for peace in Palestine?
Do we risk “accepting the unacceptable” when we are always compassionately searching for the underlying needs of others?
Why does NVC claim that others do not have the power to make us feel anything? (I was absolutely at peace before my boss spoke to me in that way!)
Can the “protective use of force” ever justify the use of armies?
Second Session:
Why "Observation-Feeling-Need-Request" (OFNR)?
with Miki Kashtan and Emma Quayle
For this December session, we invite you to read the rest of the NVC Basics packet available here and come with any questions you have. For example:
Why did Marshall Rosenberg choose these four parts to focus on?
What can we do when people develop what some affectionately call “NVC allergy”?
Is OFNR meant to be how we speak? If not, when does it make sense to lean on this structure?
What is the relationship between the OFNR building blocks and NVC consciousness?
What do we do when observations are controversial?
Is OFNR a package deal or does it ever make sense to use only some of the parts? How do we ever know which is which?
What is meant by “systemic observation” and what about the “standard” of “what a video camera can record?”
Does NVC language work cross-culturally?
Third Session:
NVC and Liberation
with Miki Kashtan and Kerstin Engel
Within NGL, we see NVC as a deep path of liberation and are excited to imagine others exploring that possibility with us. If you have the capacity and interest, we invite you to read from the NVC as a Path of Liberation packet available without a paywall, then come with any questions you have! For example:
How can we reduce the chances that we will use NVC in a way that leads to adjusting to the social status quo rather than challenging it?
How do I know I am moving towards liberation and is there ever an “end” of that path?
How can an individual reach toward liberation if what we are trying to liberate ourselves from is happening on a collective and systemic level?
How are NVC and Liberation related to each other?
What are specific NVC practices that can contribute to liberation?
Fourth Session:
NVC Across Power Differences
with Miki Kashtan, Menaka Neotia, and Vérène Nicolas
Within NGL, we see NVC as a potent pathway to address differences in power while caring for everyone and maintaining connection. We believe growing awareness of the way power differences interfere with shared clarity about needs, impacts, and resources is a first step in realigning humanity with life. When all needs are visible, resources can accurately flow to needs based on willingness and with the least unwanted impacts. This is one of our deep areas of experimentation within NGL, and we are excited for others to join us in these explorations.
If you have the capacity and interest, we invite you to explore pages 14-17 from the Connecting Across Differences packet and the entire Integrating Power, Privilege, and Liberation into Sharing NVC with Others packet, available without a paywall (and you’ll find several other packets containing related material), then come with any questions you have! For example:
Why wouldn’t we be able to engage with others simply as individuals without looking at questions of power?
What exactly do you mean by power and what leads you to the conclusion that it’s important? Why can’t we just use observations, feelings, needs, and requests?
Do power differences influence what we each observe and what feelings are available to us?
How do power differences influence that needs of ours are more or less likely to be attended to and how easily we can make requests or respond to others’ requests?
How have you seen NVC be supportive on the practical plane in connecting across power differences?
5th Session:
Empathy (within the Time for Empathy event with EWE)
with Miki Kashtan and Isabel Ortego Caro
We believe that empathy for self and others is a very potent part of NVC practices because of its power to build connection. We are excited to explore more about it together during the “Time for Empathy” event. This is the second year we are offering a Q&A session during this conference, because we liked what happened last year. We invite you to come with any questions you have! For example:
Why do many of us sometimes not like it when others guess our feelings and needs?
Why is it sometimes so challenging to respond with empathy to what people say?
Why respond with empathy instead of just saying what’s true for us?
What happens when we are in a cultural context where feelings or needs are not welcome?
And if you are interested to get a deeper look at empathy and also have the capacity, we invite you to read from the Empathy for Self and Others: a Compendium packet, available based on gift, which can expand the range of questions you might want to ask.
The recording for this session will be available through EWE, and after some time will be added to the recordings series available to those registering for the rest of this series.
6th Session:
NVC for Inner Connection
with Miki Kashtan and Selene Aswell
Living within patriarchal systems means that many of us emerge from our socialization disconnected from our feelings and our needs. We are excited for others to join us in the exploration of using NVC to restore this connection within ourselves and in that way to walk towards reclaiming our power.
We invite you to come with any questions you have!
For example:
Why is self-connection even important? Isn’t the purpose of NVC to connect with others?
Where do I start when I don't have a sense of inner connection?
What are some common reasons for why we lose self-connection and how can NVC practices support us to work our way through them?
If it’s within capacity for you and you are interested to get a deeper look at NVC for inner connection, in particular for restoring choice, we invite you to read from the Restoring Choice Using NVC packet, and to engage with the “Layers of Self-Connection” and “Facets of Self-Connection” worksheets within the “NVC Basics” packet, both available based on gift.
7th Session:
Dialogue
with Miki Kashtan and Eddy Quinn
“Most conversations are simply monologues delivered in the presence of a witness.”
–Margaret Millar, American-Canadian mystery and suspense writer
A conversation becomes a dialogue only when we are truly willing to be influenced by what we hear from one another. What can support us to have that degree of willingness no matter the subject of the dialogue? What are your particular struggles?
We invite you to come with any questions you have!
For example:
What practices can I lean on when I struggle to hold everyone's needs, including my own? How to move beyond either/or?
How do we go about dialogue when there is no shared reality about what happened?
What to do when both people want to be heard and understood at the same time?
What happens when there are power differences between the people in a dialogue?
For more to think about on this topic, we invite you to read the Needs Choreography in a Fractured World packet, available based on gift.
8th Session:
Living, Applying and Teaching NVC
with Miki Kashtan and Carimar Barrientos
Have you considered what different inner capacities it takes to teach NVC, to apply NVC in certain groups or contexts, or to live NVC in all moments of daily life? Which do you cultivate the most intentionally? Which do you most aspire to?
For more to think about in these topics, check out whatever interests you of the following packets, available without a paywall: Introduction to Applying NVC in the World (useful for the distinction between living and applying, not as much about teaching), Principle-Based Teaching of NVC (pages 9-25 and 29-31 are the most relevant, though the whole packet is on topic), Inner Work for NVC Trainers (pages 2-6, 24, 25). Whichever of these packets you choose to download, you also receive the “Introduction to the Learning Packets” packet, and the short section on “Learning, Integrating, Applying, and Sharing NVC” (pages 9-11) provides a brief introduction to the themes of this event.
Wherever you are in your journey with NVC, we invite you to come with whatever questions you have, such as:
What do I do when the plan I made for a workshop doesn’t work out? Does it even make sense to “make a plan”?
What does “living NVC” look like in different contexts?
How can NVC be applied within organisations if people don’t already know NVC?
Why do you want people to apply NVC before they teach it? What happens if I don’t?
9th Session:
Naturalizing NVC
with Miki Kashtan and Mareike Haustein
We imagine that all of us want our use of NVC to sound natural and appealing to people who have not taken on NVC, and yet many of us have had the experience of alienating people through our enthusiastic use of NVC. During this session we’re exploring naturalising the language of NVC and want to encourage you to come with any questions you might have, such as:
How do I speak in a “normal” way without falling back into a language of judgements and demands?
How much does NVC rely on specific forms of language?
If the language can be such a turnoff, why do we even practice it?
What can I do when people don’t like me naming feelings and needs?
How can I express authentically and in a way that builds connection?
For more to think about on this topic, we invite you to read the Naturalizing the Language of NVC packet, available based on gift.
10th Session:
NVC and the Body
with Miki Kashtan and Emma Quayle
In this session we are inviting you to join us in exploring how to find activities that would support learning and integration of the NVC consciousness shift through the body as a whole. We see this as a “milestone” to support people in experiencing a visceral shift in relation to core aspects of NVC.
As always, we’re inviting you to come with any questions you might have, such as:
What do I do if connecting at the body level just doesn’t work for me?
Why is it important to find self-connection on a bodily level?
How can we integrate information held in our bodies when using NVC?
How do I support others to engage in this way if they don’t know how to do it?
For more to think about on this topic, we invite you to explore the NVC in the Body packet, available based on gift.
If you register for the series you will get access to previous recordings as well.
*Note: If you have registered previously, no need to register again. Thank you!
We gratefully receive gifts at any time to support the sustainability of these offerings:
