The Language Arts curriculum is designed to provide an integrated communications program with emphasis on the development of skills in listening, speaking, reading readiness, and handwriting.
During kindergarten, your child will master the 42 sounds of the English Language. These are presented through the Jolly Phonics curriculum. There is a song, action and story for each sound. The children are taught to hear the sounds associated with letters along with writing the letters. Your child will bring home a sound book each night to practice the new sounds and motions until all sounds are introduced. Each year we are pleasantly amazed at how quickly the children learn the sounds and how excited they are with their new abilities. Knowing the sounds associated with the letters gives the children the tools unlock the code of reading and writing so they feel very successful.
We use the Macmillan/McGraw-Hill Wonders reading series. Wonders is a research based, comprehensive Reading Language Arts program for grades K-6 that gives educators the resources they need to help all students succeed. High quality literature coupled with explicit instruction and ample practice ensures that students grow as life-long readers and writers.
Our kindergarten also utilizes the 95% core curriculum. We use fun, engaging, and developmentally appropriate instructional methods to enable children to master the phonics and writing process as an automatic and comfortable skill. The 95% curriculum makes the reading and writing process easy-to-teach and easy-to-learn. By playing, singing, and building letters, kindergarten students develop the important skills they need to print words, sentences, paragraphs, proper grip, letter and number recognition, capital and number formation.
Valley Kindergarten follows the Illustrative Math curriculum, which is designed to develop mathematical concepts and skills and prepare children with a solid foundation in math. This series allows for a natural mix of hands-on learning along with paper-pencil practice. The children will learn patterning, beginning addition and subtraction, simple data collection, graphing, shapes, and continual practice with number sense.
Our science and social studies curriculum focus on teaching our children about the physical and social world they live in. With our Language Arts curriculum, we will be able to integrate some of our science and social studies units into our reading curriculum. In kindergarten we explore various units including: families, community, friendship, transportation, animals, plants, living vs. non-living, weather, and seasons.
Technology is a part of our everyday life and are certainly utilized in our kindergarten classroom. We take advantage of our kindergarten classroom ipads. The children will work on reading and math skills. You can check the Sites tab for more kindergarten websites that we visit and good for at home/summer practice.
