Photos taken from 1941 yearbook.
In the 1940-1941 school year, the Cheerleaders are listed in the school yearbook for the first time with a team photo, roster, and description.
This is the first known team photo of Newton Falls High School Cheerleaders.
In the senior section of this yearbook, Sam Hank has Cheerleader listed for his freshmen, sophomore, and junior year of high school in his biographic accomplishments. This would suggest that there was at least one cheerleader in the 1937-1938 school year, which we currently have no information for that school year.
It was typical in the 30's for men to be cheerleaders at universities and high schools. At the start of World War II, women became more interested in cheerleading and took over the sport while men were away at war. This team photo of all women coincides with the start of the war and men not partaking in cheerleading.
Side photo in yearbook shows a young girl in the gymnasium with the caption "come on yell"!
