Students are expected to maintain full class schedules of at least 5.5 credits per year to ensure they meet graduation requirements by their senior year and maintain athletic eligibility, if applicable. Counselors will communicate with students and families throughout the school year to prepare the next year's schedule. Students are required to earn at least 21 credits to graduate. The required total credit amounts determined by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce and Newton Falls Exempted Village School District are below:
English (4)
Math (4)
Social Studies (3)
Science (3)
Health (0.5)
Physical Education (0.5)
Fine Arts (1)
Electives (5, including 0.5 of Financial Literacy)
If a student is interested in graduating with an Ohio State Academic Honors Diploma, it is imperative to view the requirements they entered into high school with. Requirements must be met by 7th semester of your senior year.
Some classes must be taken in a certain order. The Course Catalog (found in our Menu to the left) outlines courses that require prerequisites and provides course descriptions, credit values, and other details.
Schedule Changes:
For all-year courses, students have from the first day to the second Friday of the school year to request a schedule change.
For semester courses, students have the first 3 days of the semester to request schedule changes.
Change requests after these deadlines are not permitted unless a teacher requests/recommends it. Students are not permitted to drop all-year classes mid-year.
What changes get approved or denied?
APPROVED if... (1) My schedule is missing a graduation requirement(s). (2) I'm scheduled into a course in the wrong grade level. (3) I have nothing scheduled for a certain class period. (4) I have already earned credit for a class on my schedule. (5) There is a conflict with a CCP class I would like to take or am scheduled to take.
DENIED if... (1) My 6th period class is too far from my 7th period class. (2) I don't know anyone in my class. (3) I don't want PE 1st period. (4) My teacher for that class is too hard. (5) I want to be in the same class as my friends.
WHY?
We work hard to balance class sizes and keep them under a certain number of students to optimize teaching and learning. Also, certain classes are only offered at certain times in the day. There is a lot of work done behind the scenes for months leading up to you receiving your schedule, and changes cannot be made unless there is a valid reason.
Struggling with your classes?
If you feel that you are falling behind or are confused in your classes, communicate with your teachers and see if there is additional help that can be provided. They want you to be successful!
Yes, classwork can become overwhelming, and your workload will likely continue to increase as you progress through high school. This is your time to challenge yourself, learn how to manage your time, and implement study skills. If you need suggestions or strategies to try, we can help you with that. We do not recommend dropping a class simply because you are worried about the course load. Communicate with teachers and classmates on how to learn the material, what study skills they use, and how they stay organized. Don't be afraid to advocate for yourself!
