From our Head of Secondary

Exams have started for Year 11 and Year 13 learners and we wish them every success with their IGCSE and IB assessments. It is always hard to say goodbye to learners, no matter which level of the school, but many of these older learners have contributed so much over the last few years. From Support 65 peer counselling to music, to sports teams, to leading in the area of service to the community, we are truly grateful for the contribution of our departing senior learners. We do of course look forward to seeing Year 11 re-join us in August as fully fledged IB Diploma learners!

Whilst we are on the subject of exams, Year 12 and Year 10 learners enjoyed good trial exam periods and learned much about the process and the vital necessary preparation for next year.

Earth Week incorporated the global Earth Day and provided learners with a strong focus on the challenges facing our planet. Learners were treated to a wide range of activities from environmental talks such as Bee Survival to a Dress Up Day and daily events in the Bus Bay. The Year 9 Green Technology Exhibition was a fantastic centrepiece of Earth Week and the learners devised and produced some very clever machines. Please see the Recent Events page for a full report.

Last weekend saw lots of sporting success in Track and Field competitions, with some fantastic individual and team achievements. Please read all about them here.

The week after next will be a real treat for many Secondary learners; Year 10 are off to Ho Chi Minh on a Humanities/Business/Economics trip, whilst Years 7 to 9 will participate in the annual MADD (Music, Arts, Dance, Drama) Week. Year 12 Biologists and Environmental Scientists head to Indonesia for a data collection visit over the long Vesak holiday weekend.

I am currently with a team of Nexus teachers on a visit to the International School of Ho Chi Minh (ISHCMC). ISHCMC is widely regarded as one of the most innovative and forward-thinking schools in South East Asia. 18 months ago the school transitioned to a new campus which is designed to be open and encourage inquiry, collaboration and risk-taking in the same vein as our new school campus at Aljunied. Our visit is proving to be very fruitful and we look forward to sharing our learning when we return to Singapore.

I wish you all a good weekend,

Peter Hart, Head of Secondary School
