Seven years to go to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)!
The learners have made a great start to the new term. Learning through the SDG's continues to give relevance and connections to the world around us and our community.
There are so many opportunities to connect, both inside and outside the classroom.
The Green Guardians meet from 3.30pm to 4.30pm every Tuesday. Leaners are welcome to join us if you would like to share ideas and help develop our edible garden on L5 and manage the vertical garden in the Atrium.
If you saw the freshly harvested lettuce on the L2 walkway on Wednesday, this is where it came from.
We have our very own vertical garden in the Level 2 atrium, where learners can see the amazing progress of the growing plants each day.
The Green Guardians have been learning how to harvest, rotate and clean out the plants to allow for optimum growth. We will be exploring different seedling options too, so look out for some more vegetables on sale in the coming weeks.
Next week, the Green Guardians will be harvesting some herbs from the L5 garden so if you need some basil, lemongrass, dill or mint then come and buy them fresh each Wednesday.
All proceeds will go towards further developing the edible garden opportunities.
If you are a keen gardener or just love eating fresh ingredients, then look out for a parent workshop which will be running in the L5 Garden.
If you are interested in getting involved in supporting the Edible garden project, please email bevan.jo@nexus.edu.sg
The SDGs are embedded into all of our units of inquiry in the I&S curriculum. The 17 goals embody global citizenship and the mindset & values we strive to teach our learners to uphold.
As part of the Fairness and Development unit, our Year 8 learners inquired into how Singapore contributes to the SDGs; through various policies, initiatives and projects. They discovered Singapore is leading the way with efforts focusing particularly on vertical farming, renewable energy and sustainable cities. In a board game simulation, earners were able to critically reflect on the interdependent nature of the SDGs and realised that they could each take small actions to make a difference.

In the upcoming Year 9 Community Project learners will collectively take action on a chosen issue affecting communities around the world and here in Singapore. In preparation, our learners inquired into the specific targets the UN has set for each goal and the challenges the world is facing to achieve the 2030 goals. Learners investigated initiatives that Nexus is undertaking such as the community gardens and the new e-waste receptacles. Learners took into consideration their interests and what particular goals excited them. We look forward to seeing how this knowledge gained is applied to their projects ahead.
As part of our Lunar New Year celebrations we welcomed the Lion dancers onsite today.
It was lovely to see parents joining us for this event. And may I say a BIG thank you to the parents and NCG for the support they have provided with the Lunar Year celebrations - it is very much appreciated.
