IB Diploma exams continue into their second week. Guanju (back left) has his third exam today. He says 'I'm really pleased we can do exams. It feels like my two years of hard work can be shown'. Connie (second right) says ‘I'm really pleased we can sit exams this year. We have the full IB experience rather than not having exams.’ Nina (front left), said 'It's a good end for my 6th year in Nexus. It’s a really good experience to prepare us for university next year.’ Gladys (back right) is a little nervous as this is her first exam today, but very keen to get started!
As the IBDP Coordinator, I feel we are very fortunate that examinations are being held this year. I am mindful that many colleagues in other countries are not able to hold exams. As Nina says, this is excellent preparation for university life and I agree with Guanju, it showcases the hard work our learners have put in over their two years in the Diploma Programme. We wish the group all the very best.

As part of Earth Week, our Y8 Humanities learners considered the environmental impact of their clothing. They were shocked to learn the distances their clothes had travelled before they had even worn them. One learner's outfit had travelled over 200,000 km! In the next few lessons our learners researched the ethical and environmental issues of the clothing/fashion industry, and are now examining some of the inequalities surrounding the cocoa trade and are in the process of designing fair trade products.

Earth Week enabled learners across all year groups to lead initiatives and raise awareness. The main focus of the week was how our Nexus community can make a difference and support sustainability in our changing world. Some Year 4 learners led a swimathon, reminding us how lucky we are to have access to clean water whilst a group of Year 5’s encouraged classes to make power pledges to help save fossil fuels. There was an energetic and enthusiastic start to developing the Nexus sustainable garden and a rubbish free day led by nursery and their rubbish free lunch. A big thank you to all those in the Nexus community who worked together to rid our local beaches of rubbish in a beach clean up lead by some Year 7 learners.
It was a great opportunity for the secondary learners to share their findings through their Green Town 2021 project in Year 9 Science and the Year 8’s showcased some of their artworks in the ‘Fragile futures’ Art exhibition.
It was a busy week making a difference.
Singapore is one of the leading innovators in green design and construction. Year 9 Science learners used their creativity, science learning, literacy and digital skills to research innovative green building and design parts of a green town. They were tasked not just with designing it in theory, but also to build a model of their project in 3D. Learners were encouraged to use green technology in their sustainable built environments and if possible, create actual working models of their structure. In English class, they also wrote science based articles on the specific green technologies they used on their build. Members of staff and other learners were invited to view these projects and discuss their ideas with the innovators on Friday, 23rd of April. The best of these projects were awarded with Science superstars for excellence in their design, creativity, innovation, presentation and RECIPE. Welcome to Green Town 2021!
