Over the past year the teaching team have shared strategies with our learners to help develop the skills required to study more effectively not just for exams but as part of necessary life skills. This week we focused our attention towards the Year 10 learners as they prepare for their Trial Exams. Our wise and wonderful Year 11 learners started out by sharing strategies such as taking efficient notes, using flash cards, revising syllabus outlines and asking good questions to help the Year 10 learners become more organised and prepared. They shared top tips about what they wish they had known and provided opportunities for the group to ask questions.
Recent research around the science of learning by cognitive psychologists provides valuable insight into how we learn best, optimise learning environments and how to balance stressful study periods alongside eating well, sleeping well and maintaining physical health. The teaching team will continue to share this research with all our learners across the Secondary School and hope to build their confidence and resilience in being prepared for exams and beyond. Thanks Year 11 for all your advice!

In recent weeks, nine Nexus MUN delegates prepared opening speeches, donned their smartest attire and attended a prestigious Middle Years MUN conference at the Overseas Family School. The conference involved three intensive days of team-building, public speaking, debating and amending resolutions. And of course, there was plenty of time for socialising and making new friends too with an astonishing attendance of approximately 800 delegates from all over the world! The nine Nexus delegates represented Finland, Yemen and Iran to debate topics such as child poverty, stopping the spread of Ebola, offshore refugees camps and the protection of endangered species. The delegates used the skills they developed during the CCA to get involved in their committees and leave their own individual stamps on the 2019 MY-MUNOFS conference.
Well done to Hanseol Kang, Samuel Liu, Kian O’Shea, Alexander Khaitov, Akika Jiang, Andres Kriz, Daniel Groenstege, Selina Xue and Tao Srivanit for being exemplary ambassadors for the Middle Years MUN CCA as well as for our school. We are already looking forward to the next conference!

Last Tuesday Year 8 learners visited Kranji War Memorial and the Former Ford Factory Museum as part of an interdisciplinary project they are completing in their Humanities and English lessons. Learners have been tasked with investigating how the Second World War impacted those living in Singapore in different ways. The visit to Kranji Memorial was very poignant and our learners were saddened to see the large number of graves. They also noted the vast range of nationalities that were buried there including British, Australians, New Zealanders, South Africans and Indians. The memorial is multi-religious and our learners worked this out for themselves by looking at the symbols and inscriptions on the graves and also the direction the graves face.
Afterwards we visited the Former Ford factory where learners were able to watch original newsreels and read primary documents that give a real insight into life in Singapore during the occupation. All of the information the learners gained from the trip will be included in their Learning Exhibition which will be held in the Auditorium on Tuesday 19th March 2019 from 2.00pm - 3.20pm. We hope to see you all then.
