As part of the Y7 MYP music unit "Sing Up" our learners have been honing their singing technique and reading of music. Over the past 5 weeks in music lessons with Mr Steven and Ms Lambert all of year 7 have learnt a variety of songs building skills to read vocal scores, singing in 2 part harmony or partner songs. There has been the opportunity to build confidence and learn about correct breathing and pronunciation.
As a celebration of learning all member of Y7 will be taking place in a fun House Singing Competition on Tuesday 2nd May at 2pm in the NEXUS Auditorium. Each class has chosen a song based on the theme "Disney". They are working in class to prepare ready for the presentation. Everyone will receive house points for participation, additional point will be rewarded for the 'best dressed', 'most musical', 'any dancing/acting' and if they sing a solo.
The winning class will receive a pizza party and the recognition of being the "Best Singers/Performers' in Year 7!
Parents and families are welcome to attend, doors open from 1.45pm.
Do you play an instrument or sing? Then we have the competition for you! We are looking for the first ever "NEXUS Young Musician of the Year". Whether you are just a beginner, have taken exams, have lessons, sing in the shower, play a unique instrument from another country or have taught yourself we invite you to get involved.
It's really easy all you need to do is:
Round 1 - Video Performance
Select your instrument
Choose a song and find the music
Practise (ask for help from your music teacher or the NEXUS music team!)
Complete this google form with your information and a video recording of you playing
Round 2 - Live Performance
Those musicians successful will be invited to perform in a live concert on Thursday 8th June at 4pm.
On Tuesday evening our Secondary Musicians brought to us a range of music presented through a coloured lens. The Secondary Choir, Chamber Choir, Senior Orchestra, Chamber Strings, Jazz/Pop Group and Guitar Club performed an array of music with 'colours' in the title set to some spectacular visual and lighting effects. From the Jazz/Pop's dramatic rendition of 'Gold Finger' through to the serene vocals of the Secondary Choir performing "True Colours"; a finger clicking "Pink Panther" from the Chamber choir to a toe tapping orchestra performance of ELO's "Mr Blue Sky!" The finale which combined the Secondary Choir and Orchestra brought the concert to a fun climax as "99 Red Balloons" fell from the auditorium sky!
Congratulations to everyone involved in the performance our music ensembles continue to grow and develop with more learners participating than ever before. We even had to extend off the Auditorium stage to fit everyone in. We will take a break for 1 week from rehearsals however after the Labour Day Public Holidays we welcome everyone back and invite new members to join our music groups.

Year 8 and 9 Sculpture Display
Year 8 learners have created a ceramic sculpture that skillfully and purposefully incorporates hand-building techniques into their final outcomes. The theme of their sculptures has been inspired by creative ideas generated from personal interests, culture, environment or other artworks. Each unique sculpture has its own unique creativity combined with a functional and symbolic personal meaning corresponding to it.
Year 9 learners have created a wire and/or cardboard sculpture inspired by one of the four natural elements; wind, water, fire, and earth. They have used various sculptural construction techniques to build a representational sculpture that incorporates the art principles of balance and harmony.
Congratulations to all our Year 8 and 9 artists!
