Our Primary Learning Conferences will be taking place on Thursday, 9 and Friday, 10 March 2022. School will be CLOSED on Friday, 10 March to allow the Learning Conferences to take place.
Learning Conferences are formal sessions for parents that are, in the main, led by the learners themselves. Our teachers will have guided and prepared your child for this experience. The emphasis is on the discussion between you and your child around their learning journey.
Learning Conferences are focused on learning. During a conference the learner reflects on their learning in a range of areas. At Nexus we believe that learning is enhanced when a child reflects on his or her own learning processes.
With all restrictions removed we are delighted to be running full face to face conferences for the first time since 2019. We have planned an engaging experience for you to explore with your child.
There will be a booked and scheduled 3-way conference between your child, yourselves and your child’s homeroom teacher. These appointments will be available after school on Thursday, 9 March and over the school day on Friday, 10 March.
Straight after these conversations your child will lead you through a selection of homeroom activities to enable you to share and understand their learning in more depth. You will also be able to experience activities with your child to showcase their learning in all specialist areas; Music, Visual Arts, HPE, LOTE-French or Chinese and BML. We strongly encourage you to choose at least 2 specialist areas to visit.
The focus of the Learning Conference is to support you to understand your child’s learning journey, and foster agency in your child. By empowering learners to become more self-directed and engaged in their learning we encourage motivation, deeper learning, and better outcomes. Learner agency also helps develop important skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication, which are essential for success in today's complex and rapidly changing world. In addition these conferences facilitate the ongoing home school relationships that we know are critical to successful learning.
The conversations with your homeroom teachers will be conducted in English. We encourage parents that are not fluent in English to have someone join the conversation that can help them translate.
You can now book your time for you and your child to meet for the 3-way conferences with your child's homeroom teacher through the Parent Portal. Bookings will close on Tuesday, 7 March.
For the Learning Conference to be most valuable for you and your child, we recommend that you put aside approximately 90 minutes for each child. All the conferences will be face to face as we strongly believe that the value that comes from the 3-way conversation is significantly enhanced by being in the same space. In addition many of the activities have been planned with access to school spaces and resources in mind. We are very much looking forward to being able to welcome you into the building. Prior to the Learning Conferences, you may find it useful to have re-read your child’s Semester 1 Learning Summary that was issued in December via the parent portal.
For learners that have joined us in Semester 2, the conversation with the homeroom teacher will be focussing on how your child is settling into life at Nexus.
iPad Case Recommendations
As mentioned in the main newsletter, we are about to update the suggestions for iPad cases we put forward for families to purchase. I am hoping that if you have bought a case recently you may be able to help. The recommendations we give are always based on user experience, if you have a case you could recommend as robust and reliable please let us know. We won't share any personal information, rather, we are looking for trends of products people have used and would recommend, so we can pass those recommendations on.
We have noticed that some learners aren't wearing the correct uniform.
Unfortunately crocs or flip flops/slippers are not suitable footwear for our active school life. The only time we use them are for our Nursery and Kindergarten learners for water play.
We also request you ensure your child is wearing appropriate sneakers or trainers for their PHE lesson.
If your child gets cold during the school day they need to wear a school hoodie. We appreciate in the past there have been supply issues but are delighted to let you know that currently uniform is being delivered 3-5 days from ordering.
Jewellery can unfortunately be a hazard for our younger learners. We respectfully request that all jewellery be saved for out of school. Exceptions are small stud earrings, medical bracelets and items of cultural or religious significance. We request that these items be kept as discrete as possible.
We appreciate sometimes it can take time to get uniform items organised.
From Term 4 - Monday, 10 April we request that learners attend school with the correct footwear and school hoodies.
Thank you
Primary learners are not encouraged to bring mobile phones, smart watches or electronic devices to school.
Some children bring these devices in order to communicate with parents on their journeys to and from school.
All devices must be given to homeroom teachers at the start of the day. They will be kept in a locked cupboard and returned at the end of the day. If a child needs to contact a parent/guardian during the school day they will be asked to go to Learner Services, where a member of staff will make the call on their behalf.
