The Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival of 2019 falls on the 5 February and is undoubtedly the most important event in the Chinese community worldwide. Meeting up and feasting with the wider family and hoping for success in the new year are key elements in the celebration, regardless of whichever part of the Chinese community you are from. Starting weeks prior to the start of Chinese New Year, Chinese people are busy cleaning and decorating their houses and shopping for the New Year.
In Nexus, our learners from Nursery to Year 13 are all soaking up the festive mood with celebrations in the form of lively activities, various performances and loud and colourful lion dances. Performances vary widely from songs to dance, from drama to rap, from orchestral performances to presentations. Learners get to understand the Lunar New Year from all perspectives to embrace cultural diversity.
The Art Splash 2019 event took place this week transforming the MPR into a vibrant and stimulating exhibition space. The exhibition culminated in a wonderful celebration of learning with learners sharing their artwork and knowledge with family and friends as part of the Primary School Learning Conferences. Many took part in the collaborative decorating of Chinese scrolls, which will be displayed shortly.
A huge thank you to all of our little artists for their enthusiasm; and to the Classroom Assistants and Facilities team and lastly to our dedicated Art teachers for putting on such a wonderful display.
One of the highlights of the academic year is the Primary School Learing Conferences. These are a wonderful occasion that provide our children the opportunity to share their learning with their families. Each conference includes a three-way conference between the child, parents and the homeroom teacher to discuss the learning journey so far and consider next steps. The children then lead families through a range of activities to share some of their learning in homerooms, in Music, in Art, in swimming, in HPE and in languages.
It is wonderful to see how much joy the children get from sharing a few of their learning journey milestones.
This week we were joined by the Russian marine biologist and explorer, Alexander Semenov. Learners in Years 4, 5 and 6 took part in a presentation and Q&A session with this amazing explorer .
