Nexus Hosts ACSIS Middle School Swimming Championships With Electric Atmosphere

What an awesome morning at Nexus!

On Saturday 26 January, we hosted 450 swimmers from 16 Singapore International School for the annual ACSIS Middle School (12&U/14&U) Swimming Championships 2019. This, combined with a similar number of families and friends, resulted in an electric atmosphere at the Nexus Swimming Pool Facility.

With a strong team of 34 swimmers, Nexus broke four ACSIS Records with Jack Cassin (Y10) and Carmen Weiler Sastre (Y10) securing two records each. And, with an unexpected outcome, our Nexus Swim Team finished a very respectable 5th overall. Congratulations to all of our swimmers who took part and gave their very best for the school we love.

We must also congratulate and thank UWC Phoenix (Girls Champions), SAS Eagles (Boys Champions), all visiting schools, coaches, our Nexus Senior Performance swim team, families and friends - what a community we all are across this island!

And finally, to the people who put the event together, we must thank our Nexus Army (parents) and Nexus staff who gave up their Saturday to make this event run so smoothly.

Nexus Stun The ACSIS 14&U Girls Volleyball Division 1 League To Claim Silver

Nexus remains one of the leading Volleyball Schools on the island with another superb ACSIS 14&U Volleyball - Division 1 Season, claiming the runners-up spot (ACSIS Silver) in 2019. With a 5th place finish last year, many of our girls returned to the court providing experience and mentorship for younger team members leading into the season.

Maintaining the team philosophy of strong team serve-efficiency and control of the first pass, our young stars were near flawless. Our results below show the calibre of Singapore International Schools we were up against and through having fun, desire to succeed, team work and tactical understanding we played brilliant team Volleyball.

9&U Netball Team Seal Stunning Silver at ACSIS Division 1 Finals

What a fantastic season, and finale, our 9U netball stars had. During our first few weeks of friendlies, where many girls got to experience their first ever netball game, we had many great wins and some losses against strong teams where we learnt a lot. Going into the finals we were excited and there just to enjoy ourselves. But the girls were on fire and had the most amazing games in the pool stage winning 3-0 against Dulwich College, 4-0 against Dover Court and 4-1 win against St Joseph's Institution Int. (a team we had lost to twice before in the friendly stages!). This meant we were in the gold medal play off match, which after a good fight we lost to Chatsworth (but finished the top 9&U girls only team!) and earning a silver medal overall. The commitment, enthusiasm and skill development the girls have shown has been fantastic and an honour to be part of. I hope many of them have found the passion for netball and will continue into next season with the 11&U team and, if not, into next year!

Young Shuttlers Stand Tall in ACSIS 11&U Badminton Division 1 League.

The 11&U badminton team had a great first season. The boys and the girls worked together to make a solid mixed team with plenty of potential. Despite results not going their way, they maintained a sense of competitive spirit throughout and were great ambassadors for Nexus. Some of the players will move up to 12&U next year so watch out international schools!

11&U Boys Football Season Concludes With A Division 1 Festival at Nexus

What a great effort at the end of the season for all of the boys who participated in the 11&U Football. Unfortunately we narrowly missed a number of opportunities which would have giving us a great shot at winning our final three games against tough opposition. Everyone who played showed grit and determination and it was fantastic to see the maturity of all the payers develop as the season progressed.

Well done everyone!

The ACSIS Division 1 Silver Streak Continues! 10&U Footballers Show Resilience During Finals Fight.

Our 10&U Football Team had a great day out, on Tuesday 22 January, at the Tanglin Trust School for the ACSIS Division 1 Finals. The team won 4 from 5 matches, securing key victories against Tanglin Trust School, GEMS World Academy and Dover Court International School along the way. The future is looking bright for Nexus Football. Congratulations to Dulwich on the victory. A superb silver medal for our committed and focussed players.

Across at Dulwich College on Saturday 26 January, our ACSIS 10&U Football - Division 3 teams showed fantastic spirit, determination and skill in their finals morning. With goals tough to come by, the tournament was filled with the excitement of penalty shootouts - the only way to split many of the Singapore International School's who participated. With a variety of success and learning our Nexus teams finished in 4th & 8th place. Congratulations to all who fronted up on a Saturday to play a sport they love.

U19 Vipers Basketball - Season Wrap! Sterling Silver!

With a team deep in experience, the Under 19 Vipers began the season with visions of gold dancing through their heads. This was a team that mixed pure basketball talent, grit and experience which was sure to be a force on the court. Needless to say that the boys lived up these lofty expectations. As famous Alabama football legend Bear Bryant once said, “ Winning isn’t everything, but it beats anything that comes in second.”

This years team truly showed that we were the dominant team of the league with an average winning margin of 20 points per game. We hit one speed bump during the season which was a tough loss to UWC Dover. We certainly thought, as the game was winding down, that things were going our way but a questionable technical foul and dramatic turnover led to the loss and the boys feeling like they had experienced a ‘sweep the leg, Johnny’ moment.

Even though we finished equal first with UWC Dover with 7 wins and 1 loss each, Dover won the tie-breaker for the gold due to the head to head result. However, the total domination of the league by the Vipers certainly means that shared top of the table could easily warrant a gold for this spectacular team of players. Having to accept the silver will be a tough pill to swallow after such an amazing season.

We were led by Robin who averaged close to 30 points a game over the season. He was supported by our senior statesman Franky along with Holger, Benjamin, Niraj, Alexi (who will all be back next year) and ever improving Kevin, John and Terry. This was a team that supported each other in every game and were a fine group of young men to coach. We will say farewell to Franky at the end of this school year which will be a very sad moment as he has been a wonderful player over the 4 years that I have coached.

With so many returning players and some fine quality coming up from the Under 16’s, the senior Vipers will be a force to be reckoned with next year and hopefully can make the jump to Division 2.

As we sign off for the season, I’d like to thank all the players and of course Mr Moriarty for his amazing support and ability to be the anchor for all our teams. I have loved my time coaching over the years and seeing basketball truly develop at Nexus. I know that come next year and the years beyond, the Vipers will be the team that Strikes First, Strikes Hard and Shows No Mercy!

Mr Bruce Home - U19 Boys Basketball Coach

16&U Vipers Basketball - Season Wrap! Beautiful Bronze!

The boys wrapped up their season last week with a convincing win against the Australian School by a score of 42-20. The entire team contributed to this dominating victory which could easily have been much more one sided in favour of the Vipers. With this victory, the boys closed the season with a 3 wins and 2 loss record which was good enough for the bronze medal in Division 2.

As we conclude the season, the lads can reflect on a year where we were so very close to being top of the table. An extremely tough overtime loss to UWC Dover early in season proved to be a gut wrenching loss for the boys as the Dover team certainly were the team to strike first but our comeback in this one showed that we could strike hard and defensively we showed no mercy at all. We know that the team above us in the standings was one that could have been vanquished has the basketball gods been smiling on us.

We also played the gold medalist from the Canadian School extremely tough and held them in check until the final minutes of the game when the eeked out a victory against us. Their coach commented on the fact ‘that no team had played them that tough all season’. All other victories for CIS has been blowouts. So the lads certainly feel that they were so very close to being top of the table this year.

As a community, we can be extremely proud of this group of boys for their determination and skill in all games. Led by our point guard Hugo and the extremely talented supporting cast of Alex, Jamie, Seth, Mikey, Lee and Marcus as well as newcomers Sam, Xavier, Yaz, Koyo and Gary - we are certainly looking at a wonderful future for basketball at Nexus. Go Vipers!

14&U Netballers Show Determination & Dedication to Stay in ACSIS Division 2

Last Wednesday our Under 14 Netball team played their final game against the Anglo Chinese International School. Our game started positively, as each team scored goals evenly in the first quarter. Nexus players focused on balancing the court and dropping back into their positions, before driving forward for the ball. This resulted in some straight line play and successful goals. As the game progressed ACIS pulled away from us to win 36-19. They intercepted passes and used quick footwork in the goal circle to score points.

This season has been more challenging for Nexus, as we moved up a division from last year. With this year to consolidate, we aim to develop our skills further and improve our performance next year. Congratulations to our players on their perseverance and determination throughout the season. Continued reflection and goal setting has allowed players to make personal improvements. Now we just need to bring these altogether.

Mrs Sonya Thompson - 14&U Netball Coach

16&U Girls Basketballers Stay Unbeaten After The Christmas Break in ACSIS League

These girls were awesome throughout the season. After a slow start, the girls 16&U Basketball certainly left a blazing trial of successes in their wake. They ended the season with their last two games, with stunning wins over both Singapore American School and Stamford American International School. This is definitely a team to watch as their dedication, collaboration and positivity ensured they left on a high.
