Last week 64 Year 5 learners and 14 staff set off on their three day adventure to Loola Adventure Resort on the island of Bintan, Indonesia. This trip complemented our Unit of Inquiry focus on 'Who we Are'. Through various adventure activities the children had the opportunity to challenge themselves in a variety of ways. Activities such as coconut tree and rock climbing, flying fox and boom net jumping required risk taking and determination. Team challenges such as dragon boating, encouraged communication, cooperation and a lot of team work to successfully paddle in the right direction!
Each year learners have the opportunity to contribute to a community project. This year we provided funding and labour to create Safe Water Gardens for two households. These systems help to contain waste water, which as a result prevents disease, improves the quality of human life, provides a vegetable patch for cash crops and provides a beautiful garden. Our learners prepared the ground by digging holes for the tanks, pipes and a filtration system. They dug, shovelled, pushed wheel barrows, loaded, unloaded, drilled pipe holes and supported each other along the way. This community action will now benefit the people who live in these homes for a life time.
Staying away from home and families is often a challenge in itself for children. They further develop their self management and social skills by taking responsibility for themselves and supporting each other. Congratulations to all Year 5 learners on a very successful camp. Thank you also to our Nexus staff for their energy and commitment to supporting our learners.

Last week Year 3 learners headed off in small groups to explore the complex transportation system in Singapore. Shadowed by a teacher and parents who kindly volunteered to join us, each group planned their own route from school to Gardens by the Bay. Which side of the road do we catch the bus? How do we know when to get off the bus? Exactly where is the MRT station in the Botanical Gardens? These were all questions that learners found themselves answering during their trip. During their journey groups had to shop for their snack, manage their money and change and notice how the transport system facilitates people with disabilities and tourists who do not speak English. Learners arrived at their destination point buzzing with experiences.
After lunch our Year 3 learners looked at a few of the sustainable systems at Gardens by the Bay including the solar powered Supertrees, the irrigation system at the Dragon Lake and how bio-waste is used to fertilise the gardens.
A big 'thank you' to all our Parent Volunteers and staff across the school who took groups on this trip. Without your help this trip would not have been possible.

What a wonderful trip we had to Langkawi with the Year 6 learners this week.
We had the opportunity to explore mangroves, rainforests, coral reefs and beaches and discovered the impact humans can have on our fragile environment. We also identified ways in which we can help to maintain a healthy balance with the ecosystems. Learners pushed their personal limits throughout the trip, demonstrating positivity throughout the long days and the heat, always with a smile on their faces.
A big thank you goes out to Wilderness Malaysia for their care and expertise. A HUGE thanks also goes out to the parents for their support in sending their children to Langkawi. The experiences here will definitely help to prepare them for the challenges of the future.
