Year 2 recently concluded the 'Who we are' unit of inquiry. In celebration of our learners' remarkable achievements during this unit, we extended a warm invitation to parents to join us in our shared space. This special occasion provided parents with a firsthand glimpse of the diverse learning engagements their children had immersed themselves in. They had the opportunity to hear about the unit of inquiry from their child's perspective, fostering a deeper connection between home and school.
Throughout this unit of inquiry, the learners explored the intricate connections between the choices we make and their impact on our overall well-being. Our learners honed essential life skills, encompassing Communication Skills, Thinking Skills, Social Skills and Self-Management Skills.
The focal points of exploration revolved around three lines of inquiry:
The Choices We Make
What it Means to Be Healthy
The Impact of Our Lifestyle Choices
There were opportunities for transdisciplinary connections. For instance, in Mathematics, learners engaged in data handling by conducting a community survey titled 'How Do You Focus Your Mind and Body?' They collected data using tally marks and crafted informative graphs to represent their findings. During the Writing component, learners developed their persuasive skills as they crafted letters and designed posters to advocate for balanced lifestyle choices. When reading non-fiction texts, learners furthered their understanding of topics such as the importance of sleep, balanced nutrition, physical activity, and proper hygiene routines.
Our Bilingual and Multilingual Learners embarked on a linguistic adventure, enriching their English vocabulary with a focus on food-related terminology. They compared healthy and unhealthy food items using descriptive language, expressing their preferences and dislikes with confidence.
Year 2 learners have wholeheartedly embraced the core message of 'Who we are' recognising that the choices they make shape their individual identities and pave the way for a future brimming with happiness and wellbeing.
The Jacob Ballas Children's Garden gave the Year 1 learners their first off campus experience, and what a great field trip! A wonderful way to bring the unit of inquiry to an end, with different mindful experiences within the beauty of nature. ‘Choices influence our wellbeing’ was the big idea behind different inquiries into ‘How people view wellbeing, and exploring and using strategies to keep us balanced’. The learners came up with different activities they would like to explore while at the gardens, and with the help of the EOTC (Education Outside The Classroom) team we were able to make it happen. The Maze, Treehouse play, Meditation at the waterfall, Yoga, and mindful walks, were some of the activities they participated with in the calming outdoor environment of the gardens. A big thank you to the parent community for continuing to support us all.
Enjoy the short video of 1B & 1G on their trip.
Last week, Year 3 travelled to the city centre to embark on an adventure into the Arts at the Asian Civilisation Museum. Learners were tasked with locating different artefacts, taking a photo of them, and later reflecting on these artefacts back at school. They made fascinating connections with a wide range of cultures. The museum showcased a vast collection of artworks, leaving learners filled with wonder and ideas to bring back to school. Watch this space!
Our Year 12 and 13 learners attended a University Fair last week to find out about the opportunities available to them after Nexus. There were over 170 universities represented at the fair and our learners asked a range of questions about university life.
Just a reminder that Year 13 have some important dates coming up for university applications.
All UCAS, Canada and remaining US applications must be submitted by learners on or before 11th December 2023.
Teacher/school references must be requested at least 2 weeks in advance of the submission date.
