To be selected for the scholarship, students are evaluated on academic performance and potential, financial need, their involvement in school and community, and goals for the future. This selective program aims to support LGBTQ leaders in their growth as student activists so that they can continue to inspire change in their communities both before and after transferring.
Students receive:
• Between $2,000-$4,800 in tuition scholarship each year.
• Admissions counseling, coaching, and financial education via the Point Community College Transfer Symposium in Los Angeles during August/September.
• A personal coach to check in with multiple times throughout the academic year to ensure students remain on track to transfer.
• Access to the Point Foundation network of LGBTQ scholars, more than 300 alumni, and many others dedicated to seeing LGBTQ students succeed.
LULAC Lambda invites current and future college students attending District of Columbia schools to apply for its 2020 scholarship benefiting students from the LGBTQ Latinx community.
Scholarship applications are being accepted through January 10, 2020. Applicants must have a 2.5 grade point average or better on a 4.0 scale and be enrolled at a District of Columbia high school, college or university. Finalists will be interviewed in February and a scholarship awardee will be notified in March. The scholarship check will be presented to the awardee in April.
The SMYAL LGBT Youth Leadership Award Program will provide up to $20,000 of financial support to offset costs related to continuing ones education, including (but not limited to) technical, and trade school, and two and four year colleges/ universities. Individual awards range up to $5,000 and are paid directly to the student when they begin attending their program of choice.
Self-identified lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) high school seniors from the DC Metro Area, who have demonstrated personal growth and leadership in their school or community are encouraged to apply!
APPLICANTS SHOULD:
Self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender (LGBT).
Have demonstrated personal growth and leadership in your community.
Not be related to, the spouse of, the domestic partner of any Selection Committee member or SMYAL board or staff member.
Consider your comfort level with being selected. Winners will have their picture and biography publicized.

Be in your last year of high school or have completed your GED
