Homework Expectations:
Math: Every Friday students will receive a spiral review math homework sheet that they will be expected to complete and turn in on the following Friday. Unlike traditional homework, this style of homework focuses on reviewing previously taught concepts each night. By doing this, students are given the opportunity to continuously practice what they have already learned without having hours of homework and are more likely to master the skills as they continue to recall previously taught units.
While most of each night’s homework is review, new skills are also practiced. The bottom row of each week’s homework is the skill we have most recently learned in class, while all of the above rows are a review of older skills.
As a parent/guardian, this homework will allow you to see exactly what your student needs to know and is currently learning throughout the school year. If you find that your student has attempted and is struggling with any of the problems, please have them circle that problem. This will alert me that they need additional help, and I will review the problems circled with them in class. Homework is not meant to discourage or frustrate students. Each week, students will receive a completion grade if they turn in their homework by Friday.
Spelling: Spelling words will be reviewed during the week, along with a list that will be sent home for students to study. Each list will have 10 words to study and will be tested on 5 of those words. We believe this will provide students with more opportunities to apply the spelling words in an authentic setting. Part of their weekly work, in school, would be to write sentences using their spelling words. Every Friday, students will be given a paragraph that contains 5 misspelled words from the 10-word list that was sent home. Students must edit the paragraph to correct any misspelled words and possible grammatical errors. Vocabulary words need to be studied. Students will draw a line to the correct definition of the vocabulary word.
Reading: Students are expected to read 20 minutes each night. (See the monthly Bingo Log below and in your student's Friday folder to help motivate your student to read in various ways.) Students can read independently, with a peer, with a pet, or with an adult. This includes reading a recipe while cooking together, being read to, swapping reading, or even reading to a stuffed animal. For each monthly reading BINGO log students turn in, they will receive 20 house points!
