Homework

Homework Expectations:

Math: Every Thursday students will receive a spiral review math homework sheet that they will be expected to complete and turn in on the following Thursday. Unlike traditional homework, this style of homework focuses on reviewing previously taught concepts each night.  By doing this, students are given the opportunity to continuously practice what they have already learned without having hours of homework and are more likely to master the skills as they continue to practice.

While most of each night’s homework is review, new skills are also practiced.  The bottom row of each week’s homework is the skill we have most recently learned in class, while all of the above rows are review of older skills.

As a parent/guardian, this homework will allow you to see exactly what your student needs to know and is currently learning throughout the school year.  If you find that your student has attempted and is struggling with any of the problems, please have them circle that problem. This will alert me that they need additional help and I will review the problems circled with them in class.  Homework is not meant to discourage or frustrate students. Each week students will receive a completion grade if they turn in their homework by Thursday.

Reading: Students are expected to read 20 minutes each night. (See monthly Bingo Log below to help motivate your student to read in various ways.

Spelling: Spelling words will be reviewed within a word work station instead of sending a list home with the intention to memorize the words for a quiz on Friday. We believe this will give students more opportunities to apply the spelling words in an authentic complete sentence. Part of their weekly work, in school, would be to write sentences using their spelling words. We are also reviewing OG rules in our weekly grammar mentor sentences.
