Mixed Media Kit
Activity 1 - Mixed Media Collage
Collaging can be a great way to express yourself! Use cut paper, clippings from your favorite magazine, or anything you find around your house or outdoors to create a bold image that represents you, how you are feeling, or whatever you like!
What you need:
Your glue stick
Either your canvas board or a piece of paper
Your gold paint
A brush
Your black and white pencils
Magazines, newspapers, leaves and/or other items from nature
Scissors (or you can tear things out using your hands)
A plastic bag, newspaper, or cardboard to place under your collage as you work, to help keep your mess from ruining anything at home
Begin by searching through magazines and newspapers for interesting images and text. Look outside your house for interesting items from the natural world that you might want to add to your collage. Cut or tear out the items you want to use and gather them at your art making space. Next, think about how you want to arrange the items on your paper or canvas board. Once you have an idea, begin to glue the items in the areas you have chosen. Think about adding some gold paint to highlight certain areas and add designs, or use your black or white pencils if you’d like.
Try to pick a theme at the beginning of your work. This will challenge you to search for items that will match your theme.

Activity 3 - Reverse Framed Picture
This activity is a collage with a painting element. It's a “reverse” framed picture because you will be painting the picture frame with your gold paint, and collaging a three-dimensional image inside the frame. Normally the frame would be the three-dimensional element of a painting.
What you need:
Your glue stick
Either your canvas board or a piece of paper
Your gold paint
A brush
Magazines, newspapers, leaves and/or other items from nature
Scissors (or you can tear things out using your hands)
A plastic bag, newspaper, or cardboard to place under your collage as you work, to help keep your mess from ruining anything at home
Begin by painting a gold picture frame around the border of your canvas. You can get as creative as you’d like with your frame. Let your frame dry before you move on to the next step. Once your frame is dry, begin to build your image inside the frame by gluing on whatever elements you choose. Build up pieces of paper and other things to create as much dimension as you can. The more three-dimensional your image is, the cooler it will look inside the two-dimensional frame.
