Working collaboratively for student benefits is the focus of engagement for the NJTSS program. Therefore, it is essential to maintain open and honest communication with parents/guardians and students (as appropriate) throughout the process. As indicated below, each school building team communicates with families and undergoes problem-solving methods to approach instruction and interventions in an integrated manner to address issues that may prevent students from demonstrating the academic skills they possess.
NJTSS Communication System for Newton Public Schools
Step 1
Before recommending a student to the NJTSS intervention program, it is the expectation of Newton Public Schools that classroom teachers communicate with parents/guardians to relay information regarding concerns around academic, behavioral, and/or social-emotional issues. Together, both constituents will brainstorm ideas and support to implement in the classroom and at home.
Step 2
Meanwhile, once effort and support have occurred with minimal gains to show, the classroom teacher may decide to initiate a referral to the NJTSS support team. Teachers, parents, and the team work collaboratively to engage students and family members in the process as valued contributors to the development of a plan to support identified needs.
Step 3
Once a student begins receiving support in the academic or behavioral instructional intervention program, the support teacher will coordinate with the classroom teacher and also begin communicating with parents/guardians. This communication will often include the resulting formal and informal assessment data during progress monitoring. Moreover, parents/guardians are provided with professional learning resources to support learning at home. In a like manner, community partnerships are encouraged as sources for academic, behavioral, health, and social-emotional interventions for both students and their families.
Step 4
Given the constant progress monitoring and fluid approach to NJTSS, a school liaison communicates with parents/guardians via letter notification when the team moves students in and out of interventions.
