What is rigor in mathematics? 

Rigor is... "about complexity rather than difficulty, depth instead of workload, and characterized by opportunities to think and reason about problems—not just produce correct answers." - From Just Equations 11/22/21

In mathematics rigor is a balance of conceptual understanding, procedural fluency and problem solving.  It is about deeply understanding math ideas and engaging in the eight standards of mathematical practiceTo learn more about depth of knowledge and rigor see Webb's Depth of Knowledge Levels.  In the Newton Public Schools we want all students to see themselves as capable mathematicians who understand the math that they are doing.  We use the Desmos Math Curriculum and Illustrative Math which allow for opportunities for students to construct and communicate their own math ideas and find an equal balance between understanding, fluency and application.  Aside from grade-level curriculum we offer extension opportunities such as math team, access to courses in Brilliant.org, and additional probem solving opportunities in Schoology.

In this work example a student finds the exact length of each side of two different triangles in order to compare the perimeters of Triangles J and K. In the process this student shows their deep understanding of the Pythagorean Theorem.
