Kindergarten Curriculum at a Glance
Reading
Reading Readiness - recognize and name most letters, recognize and identify the sounds of most letters, understand concepts of print (print contains a message, directionality, distinguish between a letter and a word)
Independent reading - “Just Right Books”, conferences, different genres (fiction, nonfiction, poems, fairy tales, etc.), practice strategies learned and increase fluency
Author Studies - Mo Williems and Eric Carle
Guided Reading - teacher meets with small, flexible groups to meet a specific need at students’ instructional level
teacher guides students through a text that would be slightly too difficult for them to read on their own
teacher also encourages students to practice the strategy which has been demonstrated at the start of the group
students in the group should be able to read the text with 92% - 97% accuracy
* grouping is based on students' needs, abilities, and interests. The groups are flexible and change according to progress and/or focus
Interactive Read Aloud - modeling strategic reading and discussing text with students
Shared Reading - students and teacher read together, focus on a reading strategy, discussion occurs before and after reading
goals:
students learn reading behaviors and strategies
students learn new words and attend to word parts
students learn that reading has different purposes - enjoyment, practice skills, learn/review information, and research
Science
Students use their senses to observe or explore objects or materials
Students keep a dated journal containing observations, drawings, and questions to be answered
Emphasis is on the process of discovery, observation, making predictions, analyzing data, keeping records, classifying and developing thinking/writing skills
Units include: Energy: Sunlight, Weather, Forces & Motion, and Ecosystems: Plants, Animals and their Environment.

Social Studies
Units of study include All About Me, Families, U.S. Symbols, and Community
Throughout the year, students will
* identify ways in which they are the same as or different from others
* identify characteristics of a family
* recognize that families have customs and traditions
*identify significant historical figures
