Dear Families,
Kindergarten is filled with many new experiences and opportunities. Socially, children will make new friends, meet new teachers, learn to be the boss of their big feelings, learn to be more independent, learn to solve problems, and so much more! Academically, the children will learn to read, write stories, do addition and subtraction, make combinations of 10, and learn about the sun and shade. These are just a few of the many amazing skills and concepts Kindergartners learn throughout the year.
It is important to know that each child may experience all of these new opportunities differently. Starting Kindergarten is a big transition! While one child may be excited and talkative to have new experiences, another may become agitated or fearful. He/she/they may even have a hard time separating from you at school or other places. Please let me know if you notice any changes at home that you think may impact your child at school. I will also share my observations from the classroom, if needed. It is important that we work together to support your child so that he/she /they can have a successful and happy year.
Each child will bring his/her/their own unique experiences to Kindergarten. We do not compare children to each other but rather to the curriculum standards. I celebrate where children are with their skill development and move them forward. I differentiate the curriculum to meet the needs of each child. While some activities may be the same for the whole class, others may be teaching the same concept but at different levels. It is through differentiation that your child will continue to grow and further develop their academic and social skills!
My motto is "you get what you need in Room 211." To that end, not every child needs the same things to learn. Through observations, modeling and independent practice, I learn what each child needs to be successful. This notion celebrates our similarities and differences and also builds tolerance and acceptance to each other's needs and learning styles.
Your child's year in Kindergarten is an exciting journey that we are on together. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to a fabulous year!
Warmly,
Melissa
